Discover the untouched cultural richness of South Sudan on this immersive 12-day journey that begins and ends in Juba. Led by Trek Africa Expeditions, this expedition takes you deep into the heart of South Sudan to meet some of Africa’s most traditional and visually striking tribes. From the scarified foreheads of the Mundari to the pastoral Dinka, and the remote Jiye people of the southeast, this journey offers a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience.
You’ll travel through Terekeka, Torit, the Imatong Hills, Kapoeta, and Mogos—each destination bringing you face-to-face with unique tribal groups including the Mundari, Dinka, Larim/Boya, Toposa, and Jiye. Expect raw authenticity, beautiful cattle camps, traditional rituals, and some of the most remote and visually powerful encounters on the African continent.
Itinerary Summary – 12 Days Exploring the Tribes of South Sudan
Day 1: Arrival in Juba – Welcome to South Sudan
Arrive in Juba, the vibrant capital of South Sudan. Meet your Trek Africa Expeditions guide at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day relaxing or taking a short walk to get acquainted with the city.

Day 2: Juba to Terekeka – Introduction to the Mundari Tribe
Travel north from Juba to the Terekeka region, home of the Mundari people—renowned for their cattle camps and striking facial scarification. Set up camp near their settlement and spend the evening observing their return from the grazing fields.

Day 3: Morning with the Mundari – Journey to Dinka Land
Wake early to witness the morning rituals of the Mundari, including the smoky cattle camps—ideal for photography. After breakfast, say farewell and drive south to Juba, then continue east toward a Dinka tribal settlement. Camp near their community and engage with the Dinka herders.

Day 4: Dinka Cattle Camps – Onward to Illeu Village via Torit
Visit Dinka cattle camps at dawn. After breakfast, drive to Torit for lunch before heading to Illeu village at the base of the scenic Lotuko Mountains. In the evening, hike to the mountain village and return to camp near a local school.

Day 5: Lotuko Mountains to Imatong Hills – Meet the Larim (Boya) People
Drive through remote terrain to reach the Larim or Boya community near the Imatong Hills. En route, stop at Camp 15 to secure local permits. Arrive by evening to witness villagers returning from the fields.

Day 6: Larim Villages to Kapoeta – Introduction to the Toposa Tribe
Spend the morning engaging with Larim villagers before continuing to Kapoeta. In the evening, visit a nearby Toposa village and return to your hotel for the night.

Day 7: Kapoeta to Koteen – Deep Dive into Toposa Culture
Drive to Pariyang to explore gold mining areas and Toposa communities. After lunch in Kapoeta, journey to a remote Toposa village near Koteen Mountain and camp alongside the tribe.

Day 8: Koteen to Mogos – Gateway to the Jiye
Spend the morning with villagers around Koteen before continuing to Mogos, a remote Toposa settlement and your springboard to one of South Sudan’s most isolated tribes—the Jiye.

Day 9: Mogos to Jiye Territory – Encounter a Remote Culture
Travel over rough terrain to reach the Jiye tribal lands. This remote region is rarely visited, and the environment can be challenging, with temperatures reaching up to 45°C. Spend the day learning about Jiye traditions and lifestyle.

Day 10: Return to Kapoeta – Through Toposa Territory
Spend the day driving back through the eastern plains to Kapoeta.

In the morning, visit a final Toposa community near Kapoeta before taking a flight back to Juba. You will also undergo required health procedures (COVID-19 testing if needed).
