Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park – Boat Safari on Lake Ihema
After breakfast in Kigali, your driver-guide from Trek Africa Expeditions will pick you up and begin the journey east to Akagera National Park. The drive takes about 2.5 hours, winding through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside. Along the way, feel free to request photo stops to capture the stunning views.
Once you arrive, enjoy a short introductory game drive en route to your lodge. After checking in and having lunch, you’ll head to Lake Ihema for a relaxing boat cruise. Look out for hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and buffaloes along the water’s edge, and spot a wide array of birdlife including African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and jacanas.
Optional: Add a night game drive for a chance to spot nocturnal wildlife like hyenas and leopards.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Return to Kigali
Rise early for a sunrise game drive through Akagera’s rolling hills and open plains. This is the best time to catch wildlife as they are most active in the cooler hours. You’ll be on the lookout for elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and antelope, along with Akagera’s impressive variety of bird species (over 500 recorded).
Your game drive will follow the scenic northern circuit, offering rich game viewing and stunning views over lakes and savannah. A packed lunch will be provided for the road, and after your safari, you’ll exit via the northern gate and head back to Kigali, arriving in the evening.
