Looking for a short but rewarding mountain adventure in Uganda? This 3 Day Rwenzori Mountains Hiking Adventure is perfect for trekkers eager to experience Africa’s highest mountain range without committing to a long expedition. Towering at 5,109 meters, the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains—also known as the “Mountains of the Moon”—are Uganda’s tallest peaks and the third highest in Africa. This mystical range forms the backdrop of Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The park spans 120 kilometers in length and 65 kilometers in width, sheltering a remarkable variety of wildlife including over 70 mammal species and 217 bird species—19 of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift. Aside from hiking, visitors can enjoy cultural encounters with the Bakonzo people, birdwatching, nature walks, and scenic photography.

Why Hike the Rwenzoris with Trek Africa Expeditions?
At Trek Africa Expeditions, our guided Rwenzori treks are led by passionate, well-trained local guides—many of whom were born and raised in the region. They are knowledgeable in mountain flora and fauna, first aid, abseiling, and mountaineering safety. Our guides undergo annual refresher training during the off-season (April, May, and November) to stay updated on mountain conditions.
Our team of porters will carry your main backpack (up to 23kg), while you keep a light daypack for personal items. Since Rwenzori weather can be wet year-round, we strongly recommend bringing a waterproof backpack cover or lining your bag with polythene to keep your gear dry.
Meals and Accommodation During the Trek
All meals are freshly prepared by trained staff and designed to meet your nutritional needs during the hike. We cater to dietary restrictions—just let us know in advance. Carrying a few favorite snacks can also help keep your energy levels up along the trail.
Accommodation is provided in basic but cozy mountain huts with bunk beds and mattresses. Due to the rugged terrain and environmental conservation efforts, we cannot offer private rooms during the trek. A warm four-season sleeping bag is essential for a comfortable night’s rest.
Some camps such as Hunwick’s and Kiharo are equipped with solar power and inverters, offering 240V charging for phones and cameras. Other camps like Samalira and Kiharo also provide solar power for battery recharging.
Important Notes Before You Hike
-
Travel Insurance is Mandatory: All trekkers must present proof of insurance covering emergency evacuation above 4,000 meters.
-
Bring Insect Repellent: The forest zones have mosquitoes and other biting insects.
-
No Trek Without Insurance: This is strictly enforced for your safety.
