Detailed Itinerary: 6-Day Mount Elgon Hike
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala to Budadiri (Mbale Region)
Begin your journey early with a scenic drive eastward through Jinja and into the lush foothills of Mount Elgon. Upon arrival at Budadiri Tourism Center, you’ll prepare for the trek—finalize logistics, meet your local guide and porters, and check your gear for the trail ahead.
Day 2: Hike to Sasa Camp (2,900m)
After breakfast, set out on your hike to Sasa Camp through Budadiri (1,250m). The trail ascends steeply through farmlands and forest to reach the camp after 7–8 hours of hiking. Gain approximately 1,700 meters in elevation today.
Day 3: Trek from Sasa Camp to Mude Camp (3,500m)
Continue your climb through the lush montane forest to Mude Cave Camp. The route is less steep than the first day and takes about 4–5 hours. Enjoy dinner and overnight at the campsite surrounded by alpine flora.
Day 4: Summit Wagagai Peak (4,321m) and Return to Mude Camp
Today’s the highlight of your hike! After an early breakfast, trek across the moorlands to reach the summit of Wagagai Peak—the highest point on Mount Elgon. Take in panoramic views before descending back to Mude Camp for a well-earned rest. Total walking time: 8–9 hours.
Day 5: Descend to Budadiri and Transfer to Sipi Falls
After breakfast, descend through the forest trail back to Budadiri. From here, transfer to the picturesque Sipi Falls area and relax with an overnight stay at Lacam Lodge.
Day 6: Return to Kampala
After breakfast, begin your drive back to Kampala, marking the end of your Mount Elgon hiking adventure.
