7 Best Safari Experiences in Tanzania

Tanzania, known for its exceptional wildlife and stunning landscapes, offers a plethora of safari experiences that cater to every traveler’s interests. From exhilarating game drives to climbing the world’s tallest free-standing peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, and relaxing on idyllic coastal beaches, Tanzania has it all. Let’s delve into seven of the best safari experiences that should be on your itinerary for an unforgettable trip.

1. Serengeti National Park’s Wildebeest Migration & Big Game

The Serengeti National Park is a crown jewel of Tanzania’s safari experiences, renowned for its incredible wildlife concentration and the breathtaking spectacle of the Great Migration. Witnessing the millions of wildebeest and zebras journey across the vast plains is a mesmerizing and soul-stirring sight. As the herds face the perilous challenge of crossing rivers teeming with hungry predators, such as lions and crocodiles, it becomes a riveting wildlife drama.

The Serengeti also offers prime opportunities to spot other members of the Big Five – lions, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. The abundance of wildlife and year-round accessibility of the park make it a top choice for game viewing adventures.

2. Ngorongoro Crater’s Big 5

Ngorongoro Crater, nestled within an extinct volcano, provides a unique and hassle-free safari experience. This natural wonder is home to an incredible concentration of wildlife, including the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. The crater’s enclosed environment allows for easy and reliable sightings of these majestic creatures, making it ideal for photography and family-friendly safaris.

Beyond the crater’s edges, travelers can venture into the southern highlands for a more private safari experience, walking alongside the legendary Maasai herders and their cattle. The cliff-top lodges offer a romantic backdrop, and combining a visit to Ngorongoro Crater with nearby attractions like Lake Manyara and the Serengeti enhances the overall safari experience.

3. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing peak, beckons adventure seekers with its awe-inspiring icy peaks. While clouds often veil the summit, clear days offer captivating vistas that entice hikers from around the globe. The climb to Uhuru Summit (5,895 meters) is physically demanding but non-technical, making it accessible to regular trekkers seeking a challenge.

Kilimanjaro offers various hiking trails with different terrain, scenery, and costs. The routes range from banana plantations on the lower slopes to barren lunar landscapes and slippery scree slopes as you ascend. To embark on this incredible journey, plan a 5-to-10-day round trip and arrange your expedition through licensed operators.

4. Elephants in Tarangire National Park

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Tarangire National Park offers immensely rewarding safari experiences, particularly for elephant enthusiasts. The park is famous for its large elephant herds and tree-climbing lions, making it an excellent destination for spotting Africa’s classic big game.

During the dry season from June to October, the park’s wildlife congregates along the Tarangire River, attracting elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and various antelope species. The park’s diverse landscape features riverine forests, swamps, and open woodlands adorned with iconic baobab trees.

5. The Tree-climbing Lions of Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park, located conveniently close to Arusha town, captivates visitors with its beautiful setting and diverse wildlife. The park is home to a wide array of incredible animal species, including buffalo, elephants, hippos, leopards, giraffes, and the famous tree-climbing lions. Birdwatching enthusiasts will be delighted by the nearly 400 recorded bird species, including flocks of pelicans and flamingos.

The best time to explore Lake Manyara is from December to February and May to July, but the park offers excellent safari experiences throughout the year. Whether exploring by canoe, motorboat, mountain bike, or foot, the park promises an enriching wildlife adventure.

6. Zanzibar Islands and The Mainland Coastal Beaches

Tanzania’s coastal beaches offer a perfect way to unwind and crown your safari holiday with relaxation and indulgence. The pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and idyllic scenery create a blissful escape for families and honeymooners alike. A sunset dhow trip and a visit to the fragrant back-street markets add to the allure of the coastal experience.

The nearby islands of Pemba, Mafia, and Chole offer an exclusive beach holiday experience with superb diving, boutique accommodations, and pampering amenities. The bustling city of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s logistics hub, is an excellent base for beach hotels and resorts, while the nearby Saadani National Park offers a unique combination of safari and beach experiences.

7. Off-the-beaten-track in Ruaha National Park

For a wild and uncrowded safari experience, Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s best-kept secret. As the country’s largest national park, Ruaha boasts vast wilderness areas where animal sightings are incredible, from herds of buffalo, sable, giraffes, and kudu to predators like cheetahs, leopards, and rare African wild dogs.

With minimal travel crowds, visitors have the privilege of nearly having the entire park to themselves. The presence of large elephant herds further adds to the allure of Ruaha. The park’s riverside lodges and tented camps offer a comfortable and immersive safari experience.
