Volcanoes National Park is nestled in a charming village known as Musanze, formerly recognized as Ruhengeri. It is conveniently accessible by public transport from Gisenyi, Kigali City, or the Kigali International Airport. The drive to Volcanoes National Park takes approximately 2-3 hours, making it feasible to engage in Gorilla tracking on the same day and return to Kigali afterward. It’s essential to arrive at the National Park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 am if you plan to trek Gorillas in a single day. Please note that there is no public transport available directly from Musanze to the National Park headquarters at Kinigi.
Rwanda is a year-round destination for Gorilla tracking. However, the best times to travel are during the drier seasons, which span from December to early March and from June to September. December to March represents a long dry season in Rwanda, with temperatures occasionally reaching up to 29 degrees Celsius on some days. Conversely, the months of March to mid-May and July to September are considered rainy seasons in the country.
Overall, Rwanda enjoys favorable weather throughout the year, but the dry season is preferred. During this period, wildlife viewing is more common due to the minimal chance of rain during the trek, and the rainforest terrain offers excellent hiking conditions. Even during these drier months, we recommend packing waterproof clothing, as the Equatorial climate can be unpredictable. The dry season is also a peak season, potentially resulting in higher prices for accommodation and car rentals.
On the other hand, budget-conscious travelers, especially those on a tight budget, may opt to visit during the wet season. During this period, hotels experience low occupancy, which translates to discounted food and accommodation services—a significant advantage for travelers. Additionally, there is reduced demand for Gorilla permits, ensuring that visitors have ample opportunities to see these endangered species without the competition of large crowds.
Safari Highlights
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, our driver/guide will greet you, and your journey begins with a complementary tour of Kigali City. Named in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt, the first colonial resident governor of Rwanda, Kigali city is surrounded by lush hills and is known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Explore intriguing spots, including the craft market, Gisozi Genocide Memorial site, and Kigali museum. Depart for Ruhengeri, the second-largest town in Rwanda, boasting a stunning backdrop of five volcanic mountains, the Virungas. Arrive at your hotel in the late afternoon for dinner and an overnight stay.
Drive Time: 2-3 hours
After an early breakfast, proceed to the National Park headquarters to meet your ranger guides for the day. Following park formalities, embark on a once-in-a-lifetime experience: tracking mountain Gorillas. Once you spot them, you’ll have the privilege to spend an hour observing these magnificent creatures. This is one of the most breathtaking wildlife encounters on Earth, allowing you to get incredibly close to these awe-inspiring giant primates. You’ll engage in silent contemplation as you lock eyes with these majestic creatures, unsure of who will break the silence first. Tracking the mountain Gorillas through the sun-dappled forest on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains is truly magical. These massive primates are exceptionally rare, with fewer than 900 in existence today. You’ll be within seven meters of them, a truly unique experience. The trek can be moderately strenuous, lasting up to six hours or longer at a relatively high altitude. To maximize your enjoyment, ensure you are physically fit and healthy. Return to your hotel for lunch and later, dinner and overnight. If time allows on this day, you can visit the Iby I’wacu cultural village and immerse yourself in the entertainment provided by former poachers, experiencing various aspects of Rwandan culture.
Golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park commences at 7:00 am, similar to Gorilla tracking. You’ll gather at the National Park visitor’s center for a briefing on the dos and don’ts while observing Golden monkeys. Following the briefing, embark on a forest trek to locate these endangered monkey species. The golden monkey tracking experience lasts for one hour, allowing you to capture photographs and videos before returning to your lodge. Unlike Gorilla tracking, which accommodates a maximum of eight people per Gorilla family, Golden monkey tracking allows for six participants per group, with no limitations on the number of participants for a specific Golden monkey community. Consequently, a family of Golden monkeys can be tracked by as many people as are present on a given tracking day in Rwanda.
Following breakfast, bid farewell to your hosts and depart for Kigali. Take advantage of last-minute shopping in one of Africa’s friendliest capitals before returning to the airport for your international departure flight.
