Trek Africa Expeditions proudly presents exclusive flying safaris to Ruhija, offering an affordable opportunity to witness the majesty of Mountain Gorillas. Our specialization lies in crafting tailor-made flying Gorilla safaris to Ruhija, the Eastern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Uganda, home to half of the world’s remaining endangered Mountain Gorillas, hosts habituated Gorilla families across four sectors of Bwindi Forest: Ruhija in the East, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the South, and Buhoma in the North.
Situated in the South-Western part of Uganda, approximately 550 kilometers from Kampala, the capital, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park stands on the edge of the Albertine valley. This region boasts a rich diversity of tree species, hosting over 350 bird species, butterflies, forest elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas. With a total of nineteen habituated Gorilla families in Bwindi Forest, Ruhija sector emerges as an eco-tourism haven, strategically positioned between Kabale Town and Buhoma in the northern sector, ensuring convenient access.
Ruhija sector distinguishes itself with a more serene atmosphere compared to other sectors. Besides Gorilla tracking, visitors can engage in bird watching, nature walks, and cultural interactions with the Batwa community. Gorilla permits for Ruhija are priced at USD800 per person per trek, allowing one hour of mesmerizing proximity to the mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. These permits, issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, are in high demand, emphasizing the importance of booking in advance. Trek Africa Expeditions facilitates the reservation of Gorilla permits on behalf of clients, streamlining the process upon receiving their details and expected travel dates.
To reach Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Aerolink Uganda operates daily domestic flights from Entebbe International Airport, offering both scheduled and charter flights. While there is no direct flight to Ruhija, travelers can fly to Kihihi Airfield, where our Trek Africa Expeditions representative will provide transportation to the booked lodge. The scenic drive from Kihihi Airfield to Ruhija takes approximately two hours, traversing Bwindi forest and charming local communities. For those with specific travel requirements or families seeking private charters, such options are readily available. Children below the age of two travel free of charge.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park remains open for Gorilla tracking throughout the year, though the tropical rainforest climate means rainfall is possible at any time. Traveling during March to May and November might experience higher rainfall, with potential accommodation discounts during these months. The optimal periods for Gorilla tracking are June to August and December to February, offering reduced rainfall and less slippery forest conditions.
