April 4, 20251-Day Rhino Tracking Trip to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary from Kampala or Entebbe
Looking for a short but unforgettable wildlife experience in Uganda? A 1-Day Rhino Tracking Trip to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a fantastic option, especially if you’re based in Kampala or Entebbe. Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos, making it a must-visit for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone interested in conservation.
Here’s what your day at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary might look like with Trek Africa Expeditions:
Morning: Early Departure and Scenic Drive
Start Your Day Early
To make the most of your trip, we recommend leaving Kampala or Entebbe by 6:00 AM. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakasongola District, roughly 3 to 4 hours away by road, so an early start helps you maximize your time with the rhinos.
Travel to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Enjoy a scenic drive through Uganda’s countryside. You can travel in a private vehicle or join one of our guided day tours. Either way, you’ll have a comfortable ride with scenic views along the way.
Breakfast Stop
Along the route, you can stop at a local restaurant or café for breakfast before continuing your journey to the sanctuary.
Mid-Morning: Rhino Trekking Experience
Arrival and Check-In at Ziwa
Once you arrive at the sanctuary, check in at the visitor center. Here, you’ll pay the entrance fee and receive a short briefing about safety rules and what to expect during your visit.
Guided Rhino Tracking on Foot
The highlight of the day is your guided rhino trek, which typically lasts 1 to 2 hours. Accompanied by experienced rangers, you’ll walk through the bush to observe rhinos in their natural habitat—often just a few meters away. It’s an awe-inspiring and safe experience that gives you a rare close-up view of these endangered giants.
Lunch: Picnic in the Sanctuary
Lunch Break
After the trek, enjoy a packed lunch at one of the designated picnic areas inside the sanctuary. There are limited restaurant options, so we recommend bringing your own food and plenty of drinking water.
Afternoon: Nature Walks and Conservation Learning
Explore More of the Sanctuary
Take a leisurely nature walk through the sanctuary to discover more wildlife. Ziwa is home to over 300 bird species, monkeys, antelopes, and reptiles. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
Visit the Rhino Information Center
Before you leave, stop by the Rhino Information Center to learn about Uganda’s rhino conservation efforts, the history of the sanctuary, and how you can support the ongoing mission to reintroduce rhinos to the wild. You can also pick up a few souvenirs at the gift shop.
Late Afternoon: Return to Kampala or Entebbe
Depart Ziwa
Leave the sanctuary in the late afternoon for the return drive to Kampala or Entebbe. Expect to arrive back in the evening, depending on traffic and your pace.
Dinner Stop (Optional)
If time allows, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before heading back to your accommodation.
