Looking for a peaceful getaway in Rwanda? Lake Kivu, the country’s largest water body and the sixth largest lake in Africa, is the perfect destination. Surrounded by breathtaking mountains and picturesque towns, this stunning lake offers a relaxing retreat with plenty of activities to enjoy. Whether you’re looking to unwind by the water or explore Rwanda’s scenic beauty, Lake Kivu has something for everyone.

Things to Do at Lake Kivu

Visit the Coffee Farms on Nyamirundi Island

Nyamirundi Island is a must-visit for coffee lovers. This island is famous for its coffee plantations, where you can witness the entire coffee production process—from planting to roasting. Don’t miss the chance to taste locally brewed Rwandan coffee right at the source.

Explore the Imbabazi Orphanage

Founded by Rosamond Carr, a close friend of renowned gorilla conservationist Dian Fossey, the Imbabazi Orphanage was established to support children orphaned by the 1994 Rwandan genocide. A visit here provides an opportunity to learn about Rwanda’s history and the impactful work being done to support vulnerable children.

Relax on the Beaches and Enjoy a Swim

Unlike many African lakes, Lake Kivu is completely safe for swimming—free from crocodiles, hippos, and bilharzia. The lake’s calm waters and sandy beaches make it an ideal spot for a refreshing swim or a relaxing sunbathing session.

Hiking and Biking Along the Shores

For adventure seekers, Lake Kivu offers incredible hiking and biking trails along its scenic shores. The cool breezes from the lake and the lush green surroundings create the perfect atmosphere for an unforgettable outdoor experience.

How to Get to Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is approximately 154 km from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. A scenic drive of about 3 to 4 hours along well-maintained roads will take you there. Private cars are available for hire at around $60 (excluding fuel and a driver). For budget travelers, public buses also operate between Kigali and Lake Kivu’s major towns—Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu.

Where to Stay at Lake Kivu

Accommodation options at Lake Kivu range from budget-friendly lodges to luxurious resorts. Depending on your budget and preferences, you can choose from:

Lake Kivu Serena Hotel – A luxury lakeside retreat with world-class amenities.
Moriah Hill Resort – A mid-range hotel offering stunning lake views.
The Palm Beach Resort Lake Kivu – A cozy, budget-friendly stay with a relaxing atmosphere.
Lake Kivu Hotel – Ideal for travelers looking for comfort at an affordable price.

Best Time to Visit Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the dry months—June to September and December to February—when the weather is perfect for outdoor activities.
