Are Rwanda and Uganda Borders Open in 2026? Here’s What Travelers Need to Know

Yes, the land borders between Rwanda and Uganda are fully open in 2026. Following several years of diplomatic tension, relations between the two countries have significantly improved, and cross-border movement is now possible without restrictions. The key border posts—Cyanika and Katuna—are operational, allowing travelers to move freely between southwestern Uganda and northern Rwanda.

This development is welcome news for tourists planning gorilla trekking safaris, cultural experiences, and overland journeys that combine the best of both countries.

Why the Rwanda–Uganda Border Was Closed—And What Changed

The land border between Uganda and Rwanda was initially closed in early 2019, primarily due to political and security disagreements. For nearly three years, land crossings remained restricted, impacting trade and tourism between the two nations.

Since 2022, however, both countries have taken important steps to normalize relations. In 2026, Rwanda and Uganda continue to hold high-level bilateral meetings, demonstrating a shared commitment to peace and regional cooperation.

• February 2025: Rwanda and Uganda held their third Cross-Border Security Meeting in Mbarara, Uganda, focusing on trade, public health, immigration, and community safety.

• March 2025: Top commanders from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) met to assess security progress and address lingering concerns at the border.

These continued engagements reflect strong political will to keep the border open and functioning.
