All You Need to Know About Gorilla Safaris in Uganda
Gorilla tracking in Uganda unfolds in two national parks, namely Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda’s equatorial location, situated on the western arm of the East African Rift Valley, makes it a sanctuary for endangered mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Nestled in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park spans 331 sq kms of dense tropical rainforest, providing a unique habitat for endangered mountain gorillas. The park’s gorilla tourism began in 1991 with the habituation of the first gorilla family, the Mubare family. Currently, Uganda boasts 18 mountain gorilla families, offering an incredible opportunity for trekkers. To partake in this experience, securing a mountain gorilla permit is essential, and Trek Africa Expeditions can facilitate the booking process.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga, a smaller national park bordering Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park, spans 34 sq kms. This park is home to the renowned Nyakagezi gorilla family, hosting the largest number of silverback gorillas ever recorded in Uganda—up to four male silverback gorillas.
All You Need to Know About Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda
Rwanda, with its single national park—Volcanoes National Park—houses endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in a 160 sq km tropical rainforest. The park carries the legacy of primatologist Dian Fossey, who conducted her research work in its rainforest before her tragic demise at the hands of poachers in 1985.
