Day 1: Hike to the Summit of Nyiragongo Volcano
our journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Gisenyi, Rwanda, where you’ll be transferred to the Rwanda-Congo border. After crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo, you’ll head towards the Virunga National Park headquarters, where you’ll meet your experienced guide.
At around 10:30 AM, you’ll begin your hike from the Kibati starting point. The hike is challenging and involves a steep, muddy trail surrounded by thick forest and thorny shrubs. The journey takes approximately 5 hours, with the opportunity to witness the ever-changing landscape and the rich flora and fauna of the region. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted by awe-inspiring views of the active lava lake inside the volcano’s crater—a sight unlike any other on Earth.
You’ll enjoy a well-deserved dinner and settle into the mountain camp tents at the summit, where you’ll have the chance to rest and take in the extraordinary scenery around you.
Day 2: Descend and Return to Kigali
After a restful night under the stars, you’ll wake up to a beautiful sunrise over the volcano. After breakfast, it’s time to descend from the summit. The descent can take approximately 3-4 hours, depending on weather conditions, but the beauty of the landscape makes the journey worthwhile.
Once back at the base, you’ll meet your driver and make your way back to Goma. If time permits, you’ll enjoy a short city tour of Goma, where you can visit the Goma caves and experience the local culture. Afterward, you’ll cross back into Rwanda and begin your journey back to Kigali. Along the way, you can stop at the border for photo opportunities, purchase souvenirs, or simply relax before continuing to Kigali for your post-tour accommodation or to catch your flight.
