Planning an African safari adventure in 2026 or 2027? If witnessing mountain gorillas in the wild is on your bucket list, Rwanda offers one of the most unforgettable primate encounters in the world. Nestled in the lush volcanic highlands of Volcanoes National Park, gorilla trekking in Rwanda is an extraordinary experience that brings you face-to-face with these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
Despite their size, mountain gorillas are surprisingly calm and curious. They may even approach you or reach out to one of the guides in a friendly gesture. Spending an hour in their presence is a deeply moving and once-in-a-lifetime moment—but one that requires advance planning and a valid gorilla trekking permit.
Where to Go: Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park, locally known as Pariki y’Igihugu y’Ibirunga in Kinyarwanda and Parc National des Volcans in French, is located in northwestern Rwanda in the town of Musanze. It’s one of Africa’s oldest and most iconic national parks, forming part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area alongside five stunning volcanoes: Mount Bisoke, Karisimbi, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo.
Home to endangered mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and an incredible variety of birds and forest mammals, Volcanoes National Park is a biodiversity hotspot. In addition to its wildlife, the park showcases Rwanda’s vibrant culture and breathtaking scenery. Gorilla tourism here plays a crucial role in conservation and contributes significantly to Rwanda’s economy.
What to Expect on a Gorilla Trek in Rwanda
Your gorilla trek begins with a morning briefing at Kinigi Park Headquarters at 7:00 AM. After being assigned to a gorilla family, you’ll be led by expert guides and trackers into the forest. The trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the gorilla family’s location.
The terrain is steep and can be slippery, especially after rain, and the altitude can be challenging—but the reward is well worth the effort. Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll have one magical hour to observe their behavior, take photos, and appreciate their close connection to us—they share about 99% of our DNA.
How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Per Day?
Rwanda currently offers 96 gorilla permits per day, with 12 habituated gorilla families available for trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Each family can be visited by up to 8 people per day, ensuring minimal impact on the gorillas and a more intimate experience for visitors.
With a 99% chance of sightings, your trek is almost guaranteed to be successful thanks to the expertise of the park’s rangers and trackers.
Rwanda Gorilla Permit Prices for 2026–2027
To trek mountain gorillas in Rwanda, you’ll need to secure a gorilla permit issued by the Rwanda Development Board. The cost is:
-
USD $1,500 per person (all nationalities)
This permit includes one hour of gorilla viewing and contributes to conservation efforts and community development around the park.
Due to high demand—especially during peak seasons (January, February, July, August, September, and December)—booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
