2 Day Safari to Akagera National Park from Kigali
June 9, 2025Gorilla Trekking and Gorilla Habituation in Bwindi Forest, Uganda
Combining gorilla trekking and the gorilla habituation experience in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a rare opportunity to connect deeply with mountain gorillas in two distinct ways. This immersive adventure lets you observe a fully habituated family used to humans and also participate in the process of habituating a wild group—offering both thrilling encounters and behind-the-scenes insight into gorilla conservation.
Here’s a suggested 4-day itinerary for this unforgettable journey:
Day 1: Travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Arrive in Uganda via Entebbe International Airport or begin your journey from Kigali International Airport in Rwanda—both options offer convenient access to Bwindi.
Depending on your travel preferences and budget, transfer to the park by road (a scenic drive through the countryside) or opt for a scheduled domestic flight to a nearby airstrip.
Settle into a cozy lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you’ll spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the incredible gorilla experiences that lie ahead.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure
Start the day with an early breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a safety briefing led by expert rangers.
Begin your guided gorilla trek into the mist-covered rainforest, following trackers in search of a habituated gorilla family. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the gorillas’ location.
Once you find them, you’ll be allowed to spend a magical hour observing these majestic creatures up close—watching them feed, groom, and interact within their natural environment.
After this once-in-a-lifetime encounter, return to your lodge for a well-earned rest and time to reflect on the day.
Day 3: Gorilla Habituation Experience
Today offers something even more immersive—the rare chance to participate in a gorilla habituation experience.
Join a team of researchers, conservationists, and trackers as you venture deep into the forest to find a semi-habituated gorilla group. These gorillas are still getting used to human presence, offering a more raw, extended interaction.
Spend up to four hours in the presence of the gorillas, learning about their behavior, social structures, and the ongoing habituation process.
Enjoy a packed lunch in the forest before hiking back and returning to your lodge in the late afternoon.
Day 4: Return Journey & Departure
After a leisurely breakfast, begin your journey back to Entebbe or Kigali, depending on your departure route.
You may choose to catch a connecting domestic flight or travel overland through Uganda’s scenic highlands. If you’re extending your stay, we can help you arrange add-on experiences, such as a safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park or a visit to Lake Bunyonyi.
Understanding the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi
Unlike traditional gorilla trekking (which allows one hour with a fully habituated family), the gorilla habituation experience offers up to four hours with a semi-habituated group. This means you spend more time in the forest and gain deeper insight into gorilla behavior, social structure, and conservation efforts.
Only four permits are issued per day for habituation, and only in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of southern Bwindi. Permits are highly competitive and should be booked 2–3 months in advance.
