Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park starting from the Cyanika Border? If you’re traveling from Kigali or Rwanda, the Cyanika border crossing is one of the best entry points to experience the breathtaking mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Trek Africa Expeditions is here to help you design a personalized safari with flexible activities from Cyanika to Rushaga, making your journey smooth and unforgettable.
Located in Kisoro District, Southwestern Uganda, the Cyanika border is roughly a 2-hour drive (45 km) along the Kisoro–Cyanika Road to the Rushaga region. The paved road gets rough closer to the park, so we use comfortable 4×4 vehicles to ensure a safe, pleasant ride. We can pick you up directly from the border or anywhere in Cyanika to start your Rushaga gorilla trekking experience.
Discover Rushaga Sector
The Rushaga sector is one of four key gorilla trekking zones in Bwindi, located in southwestern Uganda along the Congo border. This region is home to a significant portion of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making Bwindi one of the top destinations globally for wildlife lovers. Recognized as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, Bwindi boasts one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse forests, offering an extraordinary gorilla trekking adventure.
What to Expect When Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga from Cyanika Border
Gorilla trekking in Rushaga begins early, typically at 7:00 am, with an orientation at the Rushaga Park Headquarters. Here, guides brief you on the trekking rules and how to behave around the gorillas to ensure both your safety and theirs. Accompanied by experienced park rangers and trackers, you will hike through lush forest trails in search of these gentle giants.
Once you locate the gorilla family, you’ll have a precious hour to observe, photograph, and simply enjoy their presence in the wild. Afterward, you’ll return to the starting point and receive a certificate commemorating your successful trek.
Uganda Wildlife Authority limits gorilla trekking groups to eight visitors per habituated family each day to protect these endangered animals. To participate, trekkers must be at least 15 years old to minimize disease transmission risks and ensure safety.
The Rushaga sector is home to several habituated gorilla families, including Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Bikyingi, Kahungye, Busingye, and Mucunguzi. Gorilla trekking permits cost USD 800 for non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens, with only 56 permits available daily for this sector.
Experience Gorilla Habituation in Rushaga
For a deeper, more immersive wildlife experience, try gorilla habituation in Rushaga. This unique activity allows you to spend up to four hours with gorillas that are still getting used to human presence. With only four permits available daily, this experience requires advance booking.
During habituation, you’ll observe the gorillas’ natural behaviors — feeding, moving, resting, and social interactions — alongside researchers and guides. This half or full-day excursion offers a rare glimpse into the lives of mountain gorillas as they adapt to the wild.

Batwa Cultural and Community Experience in Rushaga
Spending five days in the Rushaga region gives you the chance to connect with the Batwa people — the original forest inhabitants of Bwindi. Once known as pygmies, the Batwa were relocated to protect the gorillas and forest, but they warmly share their rich cultural heritage through traditional dances, honey harvesting demonstrations, and stories of forest life.
Visit Batwa villages and nearby communities where women craft handmade goods and support local schools. Trek Africa Expeditions encourages responsible tourism and welcomes any contributions to local schools, such as clothes and learning materials.
