Are you planning a gorilla trekking tour in Uganda starting from the South Sudan border? Whether you are based in South Sudan or arriving via the Elegu-Nimule border post, Trek Africa Expeditions will help you organize a seamless gorilla trekking experience in Uganda.
Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that brings travelers face-to-face with the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural forest habitat. Although the activity requires time, effort, and a financial commitment, the experience of observing gorillas up close in the wild is unmatched and remains a highlight of any African safari.
Where to Go Gorilla Trekking from South Sudan Border
Uganda is the most accessible gorilla trekking destination from South Sudan. You can cross into Uganda via Elegu/Nimule border post, and from there, Trek Africa Expeditions can organize transport, accommodation, gorilla permits, and all logistics to either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Gorilla trekking in Uganda involves hiking through dense forests, crossing streams, and navigating steep terrain in search of habituated gorilla families. Once located, you are allowed to spend one full hour with these majestic primates, observing their behavior, interactions, and natural way of life.
For those who wish to spend more time with the gorillas, Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi allows up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated group, accompanied by researchers and trackers.
Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa
Mountain gorilla trekking is available in only three countries:
-
Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
-
Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
-
DR Congo: Virunga National Park (mountain gorillas) and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (eastern lowland gorillas)
If you’re starting your journey from South Sudan, Uganda offers the most practical and cost-effective option for gorilla trekking. Trek Africa Expeditions recommends booking your gorilla permit at least 5 to 6 months in advance, especially if you’re planning to trek during the peak seasons of June–September or December–February.
Cost of Gorilla Permits in Uganda
Gorilla trekking in Uganda requires a gorilla permit, which can be booked through Trek Africa Expeditions or directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The current costs are:
-
$800 – Foreign non-residents
-
$700 – Foreign residents
-
UGX 300,000 (approx. $80) – East African citizens (including South Sudan)
For the Gorilla Habituation Experience, the permit costs $1,500 per person and is available only in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Uganda has 24 habituated gorilla groups available for tracking daily, with the majority located in Bwindi and one group in Mgahinga. That translates to 152 gorilla permits available each day, making Uganda the most accessible destination for gorilla trekking in Africa.
Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, and there is no strict upper age limit as long as you are reasonably fit. For elderly or mobility-challenged visitors, Trek Africa Expeditions can arrange sedan chair carriers (palanquins), where porters assist by carrying you to and from the forest. This service costs between $400 and $500, and can be arranged in advance or on the day of the trek.
Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy
Uganda has a strict cancellation policy. If you cancel your permit within 0–8 days of your scheduled trek, no refund is given. Always confirm the latest terms at the time of booking.
Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking from South Sudan
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons:
-
January to February
-

These months offer easier hiking conditions, clearer views, and a more comfortable experience overall. However, gorilla sightings are excellent throughout the year.
