If you’re based in Mombasa, Kenya, and looking to experience the incredible adventure of gorilla trekking, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you’re planning to venture to Uganda, Rwanda, or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, Trek Africa Expeditions is here to help you organize a seamless trip. We offer both road and air travel options to make your journey to see the mountain gorillas as smooth as possible.
Why Choose Gorilla Trekking in Africa?
Gorilla trekking is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences you can have. The journey involves hiking through dense forests, challenging terrains, and swamps, all in search of the magnificent mountain gorillas. While the trek can be physically demanding, the reward of encountering these endangered creatures in their natural habitat makes it all worthwhile. In Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo, you’ll have the opportunity to spend one hour with these incredible animals, learning about their behavior and observing them up close.
For those who want a more immersive experience, Uganda offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, allowing you to spend up to four hours with the gorillas. This is an amazing option for those wishing to deepen their connection with the gorillas in the wild.
Where Does Gorilla Trekking Take Place in Africa?
If you’re considering starting your journey in Mombasa, Kenya, we can arrange a trip that takes you to the heart of the gorilla trekking regions. You’ll find mountain gorillas in three African countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. The top national parks where you can embark on a gorilla trek include:
-
Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
-
Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
-
DR Congo: Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (for Lowland gorillas)
A gorilla trekking permit is required for entry into these parks. Given that permits often sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons (June to September), we recommend booking your trek at least five months in advance. Trek Africa Expeditions can help you secure permits and plan your trek in advance to avoid last-minute disappointments.
Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs in Uganda
-
Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
-
Uganda Residents: $700 per person per trek
-
East African Citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, South Sudan): $80 per person
These permits allow you to trek for one hour with the gorillas in either Bwindi or Mgahinga. Uganda has 17 habituated gorilla family groups, with 16 located in Bwindi and one in Mgahinga, offering 136 permits each day. For those who want more time with the gorillas, Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi. This costs $1,500 per person and provides a 4-hour experience with semi-habituated gorillas under the supervision of researchers.
Age Limits for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
To participate in gorilla trekking, travelers must be at least 15 years old. There is no strict upper age limit, but participants should be in good physical condition, as the trek can be challenging. For elderly travelers or those with mobility issues, there are sedan chair carriers available to assist during the trek. This service costs between $400 to $500 and can be arranged in advance or on the day of the trek.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
While gorilla trekking is available year-round, the best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons, from January to February and June to early September. During these months, the terrain is less muddy, and visibility is better, making your trek easier and more enjoyable.
