June 24, 2025Guided Nature Walk in Lake Mburo National Park
A guided nature walk in Lake Mburo National Park is one of the most intimate and rewarding ways to experience Uganda’s unique savannah wildlife. Unlike other national parks, Lake Mburo has no lions or elephants, making it one of the safest parks for walking safaris. Leopards are rarely seen, giving you the freedom to walk through open plains, acacia woodlands, and scenic valleys while observing wildlife and birds up close.
Home to over 69 mammal species and 332 bird species, Lake Mburo is Uganda’s smallest savannah park, yet it boasts remarkable biodiversity. It’s the only park in the country where you can find impalas, and it’s the best place in western Uganda to see zebras, elands, and Rothschild’s giraffes on foot.
At Trek Africa Expeditions, we include nature walks in all our Lake Mburo safari packages to give you a deeper connection to the park’s wildlife and landscapes.
Where Are Nature Walks Conducted in Lake Mburo?
Inside the Park (With UWA Rangers)
Guided nature walks within the park are organized by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and led by armed ranger guides. These walks typically last about 2 hours and explore areas rich in wildlife like giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, topis, and more. The birdlife is exceptional, with sightings of species like the shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, white-winged warbler, and papyrus yellow warbler.
Outside the Park (With Local Communities)
Community-led nature walks are also available just outside the park, often organized through nearby lodges like Rwaboko Rock Lodge and Mihingo Lodge. These walks offer similar wildlife encounters and include cultural experiences like visiting local homesteads and seeing Ankole long-horned cattle, a signature of the region.

Best Time to Do a Walking Safari in Lake Mburo
The dry seasons of December to February and June to October are the best times for walking safaris. During these months, the trails are dry and easier to navigate, and wildlife is more active and visible near water sources.
Avoid the rainy seasons if possible, as paths can become slippery and animal sightings less predictable.
