About Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the last remaining strongholds of the endangered mountain gorilla. Located in southwestern Uganda, it is one of only four national parks in the world where you can encounter these incredible primates in the wild. The others are Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), and Virunga National Park (DR Congo).
Bwindi is also one of Africa’s most ancient rainforests, home to:
-
Over 120 mammal species (including mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and L’Hoest’s monkeys)
-
350 bird species
-
310 butterfly species
-
200 tree species
-
51 reptiles
-
88 moth species
Roughly half of the global mountain gorilla population—around 500 individuals—live in Bwindi, across more than 15 habituated family groups available for trekking.
