How Much Does Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Cost in 2026–2027? — Planning to trek gorillas in Uganda in 2026 or 2027? Here’s what you need to know about the costs involved. Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda are priced as follows:
-
$800 per person for foreign non-residents
-
$700 per person for foreign residents
-
$80 per person for East African citizens (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan)
These permits allow you to spend one unforgettable hour observing mountain gorillas in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Uganda is home to 24 habituated gorilla families, with 23 in Bwindi and one in Mgahinga. This means 152 gorilla trekking permits are available each day, so it’s important to book early.
Want to Spend More Time With the Gorillas?
If one hour isn’t enough, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi. This unique experience allows you to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group under the guidance of expert researchers and trackers. A habituation permit costs $1,500 per person.
How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda
Gorilla trekking permits can be booked either:
-
Directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), or
-
More conveniently, through a trusted local operator like Trek Africa Expeditions.
Booking in advance is strongly recommended—at least 2 to 3 months before your travel dates, especially during peak travel seasons.
Frequently Asked Questions About Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
What Is the Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. While there is no official upper age limit, trekkers must be reasonably fit. For older or less mobile travelers, sedan chair carriers are available. These specially designed chairs can be arranged in advance or on the day of the trek and are carried by a team of porters. Rental typically costs between $400 and $500.
When Is the Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?
Gorilla trekking is possible all year round, but the best times to visit are during the dry seasons—from January to February and June through early September. During these months, the trails are less muddy, and gorilla sightings are often clearer due to less dense vegetation.
