Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija Sector of Bwindi from Lake Bunyonyi
June 24, 2025Is it Safe to Visit the Democratic Republic of Congo as a Tourist?
While international headlines often paint the entire Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as unsafe, the reality is more nuanced. Certain regions of the country—especially in the east and around the capital—are safe and increasingly welcoming to travelers. Destinations like Kahuzi-Biega National Park, known for eastern lowland gorilla trekking, and Kinshasa, the capital city, are generally stable and open to tourism.
However, areas around Goma and Virunga National Park remain volatile due to occasional unrest, and travelers should exercise caution or avoid this area unless advised otherwise by local authorities or your tour operator.
That said, the DRC government, together with international partners and conservation bodies, has made tremendous progress in restoring security, especially in national parks. Many travelers are now choosing Congo for gorilla trekking over Rwanda and Uganda due to its significantly lower permit fees.
Is Congo a Good Alternative for Gorilla Trekking?
Yes, absolutely—especially now that tourism is steadily returning. While Congo has previously faced serious challenges, including civil unrest and health epidemics, major progress has been made. Today, several parks are safe to explore, and tourism infrastructure is gradually improving.
More and more visitors are choosing Congo for gorilla trekking due to the affordable permit prices, stunning rainforest landscapes, and opportunities to see both mountain gorillas in Virunga and eastern lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Trek Africa Expeditions has already arranged numerous safaris to these areas, offering a safe and seamless experience from start to finish.

How to Get Gorilla Trekking Permits for Virunga
Once your travel dates are confirmed, Trek Africa Expeditions will secure your Virunga gorilla permits directly from park authorities. After payment, we’ll send a scanned receipt to confirm your reservation.
From there, you can go ahead and book your international flights. The remaining balance for your safari can be paid closer to your arrival.
Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park
In addition to mountain gorillas in Virunga, Congo is home to eastern lowland gorillas, found only in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. With just two habituated families open for trekking, permits here are highly limited and competitive, especially during peak travel months like June–September and December–February.
We recommend booking 3 to 4 months in advance to secure your spot—particularly if you plan to travel during the high season.
Best Time to Visit Congo for Gorilla Trekking
Congo’s tropical climate means it can rain at any time, but dry seasons offer the best trekking conditions:
-
December to February
-
June to September
During these months, trails are drier, vegetation is less dense, and wildlife sightings are easier and more enjoyable. The wetter months (March–May and October–November) can make trekking more difficult due to slippery paths and thicker forest cover.
How to Get to Virunga National Park, Congo
The easiest way to access Virunga National Park is by flying into Kigali International Airport in Rwanda. From Kigali, you’ll drive to Gisenyi, cross the Rwanda-Congo border into Goma, and then continue to the park headquarters.
For Kahuzi-Biega National Park, you’ll continue further toward Bukavu in eastern Congo. Our team at Trek Africa Expeditions will organize all transfers, permits, and accommodations, ensuring a smooth and safe journey.
