Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda
Embark on an extraordinary gorilla tracking experience in Rwanda, home to the endangered mountain gorillas, the largest primate globally, and one of the most endangered species. With just 840 mountain gorillas remaining in the wild, Rwanda plays a crucial role in their conservation.
Mountain gorillas, a subspecies of the Eastern gorilla, prefer open canopy forests where light permeates the forest floor. Unlike their tree-dwelling counterparts, mountain gorillas are ground-dwellers, primarily herbivores with a diet comprising roots, leaves, vines, stems, and bamboo. Their movement is characterized by knuckle walking, and groups, ranging from a mated pair to up to thirty individuals, are led by dominant males.
Male mountain gorillas can stand six feet tall and weigh up to 200 kilograms, while females are smaller, standing under five feet in height and weighing around 100 kilograms. Despite their size, mountain gorillas remain within a relatively small area of their habitat.
Best Time to Visit
While gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year, the dry season is preferable for a more enjoyable experience. The wet season can create challenging hiking conditions and may lead gorillas to seek shelter, making observation more difficult.
The wet season varies depending on the country:
- Rwanda: Short wet season from October to November, long wet season from mid-March to June.
- Uganda: Wet seasons from March to May and September to November.
- Congo: North of the equator, wet season from April to October; south of the equator, wet season from November to March.
Fitness & Health
Gorilla treks can vary in duration, from 40 minutes to seven hours, making good physical and mental condition essential. Visitors are advised not to participate if unwell, as gorillas are susceptible to human-borne illnesses.
What to Wear
Dress appropriately for the strenuous rainforest hike:
- Long-sleeved shirt and trousers.
- Lightweight hiking boots.
- Protective gloves (optional).
Rules & Codes of Conduct
Observing gorillas requires adherence to rules for both visitor and gorilla safety:
- Follow guide instructions at all times.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters from gorillas.
- In the presence of a charging silverback, remain still, low, and adopt a submissive posture.
- Avoid sudden moves or loud noises.
- Do not touch young gorillas if approached.
- Avoid prolonged eye contact with gorillas.
- Refrain from using flash photography.
- Ensure good health to prevent transmission of illnesses to gorillas.
- Each gorilla family can be visited once daily by groups of up to eight people, limited to an hour.
- No smoking, drinking, or eating within 200 meters of a gorilla family.
- Littering is strictly prohibited.
- Children under fifteen cannot join gorilla treks.
While gorillas are not inherently aggressive, following guidelines is crucial for safety. Sightings are not guaranteed, and fees contribute to ongoing conservation efforts.
