Introducing the New Rushaga Gorilla Family – Rwigi
The allure of Gorilla tracking within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda grows even more captivating with the expansion of its Gorilla families. This development sparks hope for travelers planning Gorilla Tours in Uganda. The Rushaga Gorilla Families have now reached a count of nine, contributing to a total of 72 Gorilla permits, significantly enhancing the chances of encountering these majestic creatures.
This transformative shift occurred in the Southern sector of Bwindi, precisely the Rushaga Sector. Formerly hosting eight Gorilla families, this sector now boasts nine following the emergence of a new Gorilla family from the Kahunge group. Notably, Kahunge held distinction as the largest Gorilla family within this sector, comprising twenty-four members, including four impressive silverbacks, with Kahunge being the dominant male.
The Genesis of Rwigi Family
Amidst the Rushaga Gorilla families, a silverback engaged in a dispute with the dominant male, culminating in a confrontation that prompted one of them to depart the group. Rwigi, one of the males involved in the altercation, left Kahunge’s fold with a contingent of believers who aligned with him.
Rwigi – A New Dawn
Emerging from the shadow of Kahunge, Rwigi stands as a nascent Gorilla family within the Rushaga sector. This family is aptly named after its silverback, bearing ten members. Comprising one silverback, five females, two juveniles, and two babies, Rwigi represents a thriving testament to nature’s resilience.
Navigating the Path to Rushaga Gorilla Families
Journeying to the Rushaga sector within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park unfolds through road travel. Whether embarking from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, or from Entebbe, the international airport hub, the route encompasses scenic passages through quaint towns, punctuated by stops at the Equator line and a refreshing lunch break. While this venture requires 9-10 hours’ drive, another option lies in accessing Rushaga from Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. This route offers a more condensed journey compared to the Kampala or Entebbe paths, encompassing a five-hour drive. The Kigali route treats travelers to picturesque vistas, adorned with lush rolling hills of potato and banana plantations before crossing into Uganda’s embrace.
