June 16, 2025Planning to Visit Gorillas in Africa in 2026-2027? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
If you’re dreaming of coming face-to-face with wild mountain gorillas in Africa in 2026, you’re not alone. Gorilla trekking is one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters in the world—and a bucket-list adventure for many travelers. Despite the cost, physical effort, and planning involved, the reward of seeing these endangered giants in their natural habitat is beyond compare.
In this guide, Trek Africa Expeditions breaks down everything you need to know about gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), from the best places to visit and permit prices to what to pack and when to go.
What Is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense rainforests, sometimes across challenging terrain, rivers, and swamps, in search of a gorilla family. Once found, you get to spend one incredible hour observing them in their natural environment. In Uganda, there’s also the rare opportunity for a Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated group as they adjust to human presence.
A moderate level of fitness is recommended, especially for treks in steeper forest regions like Bwindi or Volcanoes National Park.
Where Are the Best Places to See Gorillas in Africa in 2026?
Mountain gorillas live in only three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. These countries are home to four national parks that offer gorilla trekking experiences:
-
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park – Uganda
-
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Uganda
-
Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda
-
Virunga National Park – DR Congo
If you’re interested in a different kind of experience, Kahuzi-Biega National Park in DR Congo offers the chance to trek eastern lowland gorillas, which are larger and live in different terrain.
Permits sell out quickly—especially from June to September. We recommend booking at least 5 to 6 months in advance to secure your dates.

Why Choose Uganda for Gorilla Trekking in 2026?
Uganda offers the best value for gorilla trekking in Africa. It’s more affordable than Rwanda and safer and more stable than DR Congo, making it an excellent choice for both first-time and returning visitors.
Plus, Uganda’s Gorilla Habituation Experience—available only in Bwindi—provides a deeper and more immersive encounter.
Gorilla Trekking Age Limit
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in all three countries is 15 years. While there’s no official upper limit, trekkers must be physically fit to handle the hike. In Uganda’s Bwindi Forest, elderly or mobility-limited travelers can arrange for a sedan chair and porter team, allowing them to be carried in and out of the forest. These can be arranged in advance or on the day and cost around $400–$500.
Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy
Permit cancellations are non-refundable within 8 days of your trek date. However, due to recent changes brought on by COVID-19, Uganda has become more flexible, allowing travelers to reschedule their trek dates up to twice if impacted by travel disruptions. Be sure to confirm the latest policies when booking with Trek Africa Expeditions.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Gorillas in 2026?
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons offer the best conditions for hiking and photography:
-
January to February
-
June to early September
During these months, trails are less muddy, and the forest vegetation is thinner—making it easier to spot the gorillas.
