Choosing the Best Time to Visit Mgahinga National Park for Gorilla Trekking
When planning a gorilla trekking trip to Mgahinga National Park, it’s important to consider when to travel, either during the low or high season. The high season months of June, July, August, December, January, and February are preferred by many travelers due to the relatively drier weather, making it easier to walk through the trails. Additionally, during these months, the vegetation is not fully grown, making gorilla sightings easier and more clear.
On the other hand, the low season months of March, April, May, October, and November are a bit wetter, with fully grown vegetation and much slippery trails, making trekking more challenging. However, during the low season, travelers can benefit from discounts on flights, lodges, and other services.

Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park is an unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Located in southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga National Park is the smallest of Uganda’s national parks and one of the only places in the world where you can see the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Mgahinga National Park is home to one habituated gorilla family known as the Nyakagezi group, which consists of approximately 10 members. Trekking to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that takes visitors deep into the heart of the forest.
The gorilla trekking experience in Mgahinga is typically a full day activity that starts early in the morning with a briefing from the park rangers. Visitors are then divided into groups of up to 8 people and assigned a guide who will lead them on the trek through the forest to find the gorillas.
The trekking experience can be challenging as it involves hiking through dense forest and steep terrain, but it is all worth it once you catch a glimpse of the gorillas. Visitors are allowed up to one hour with the gorillas, during which time they can observe the gorillas going about their daily routines, feeding, playing, and interacting with one another.
Gorilla trekking permits in Mgahinga National Park can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a registered tour operator. The cost of the permit is currently USD800 for foreign non-residents, USD700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
In addition to gorilla trekking, visitors to Mgahinga National Park can also enjoy other activities such as golden monkey trekking, volcano hiking, bird watching, nature walks, and cultural experiences with the Batwa people.
Overall, gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should not be missed by anyone visiting Uganda.
Golden Monkey Trekking
Mgahinga National Park is one of the few places in the world where you can experience the rare combination of gorilla and golden monkey trekking. Apart from gorilla trekking, the park offers an opportunity to trek golden monkeys and experience their unique habituation process.
Golden monkey trekking can be done either in the morning or afternoon, depending on your preference. The park is home to habituated golden monkey families, which means you have a chance to observe them in their natural habitat. Mgahinga National Park is the only national park in Uganda where mountain gorillas and golden monkeys coexist, earning it the nickname “the place where gold meets silver.”
