Rwanda’s Floating Hotel on Lake Kivu: The Kivu Queen Uburanga Luxury Houseboat
The Kivu Queen Uburanga, also known as Rwanda’s floating hotel on Lake Kivu, is a luxury houseboat recently launched into the water, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Rwandan tourism. Although the ship has not yet undergone a full lake test, many of its essential systems, including electricity, generators, plumbing, lighting, a jacuzzi, and sewage schemes, have been thoroughly tested in preparation for its operational debut.
Operated by Mantis, the Kivu Queen Uburanga will offer an exclusive service itinerary, sailing the stunning waters of Lake Kivu from north to south and back again. In addition to the scenic voyages, the ship promises a variety of onboard activities, including water sports, that cater to travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation.
The houseboat boasts 11 contemporary cabins, each thoughtfully designed to provide guests with a luxurious experience. Additional features include a swimming pool, a dining salon, a bar, and a viewing deck equipped with a hot tub. These amenities allow travelers to immerse themselves in the beauty of Rwanda while enjoying the comfort and elegance of the ship.
The upper deck of the Kivu Queen Uburanga offers an exclusive option for VIP guests. This section can be booked separately from the rest of the boat and includes two VIP staterooms, a third cabin, a private lounge, a small service kitchen, a guest toilet, and a spacious aft deck. When booked by dignitaries or other guests seeking privacy, this level can be secured separately, with the forward jacuzzi reserved for their exclusive use.
The Kivu Queen Uburanga is expected to operate exclusively within Rwandan waters, serving as a unique attraction for travelers rather than a vessel for cross-border trade. It will play a significant role in opening up the southern part of Rwanda’s Western Province to visitors, as most guests will board the ship through Rwanda itself.
Lake Kivu, which empties into the Ruzizi River and flows into Lake Tanganyika, is one of Rwanda’s premier holiday destinations. It offers a perfect getaway with its sun-kissed shores, refreshing waters, delectable local cuisine, fascinating cultural sites, and expertly crafted cocktails. For those looking to create an unforgettable holiday or honeymoon experience, Trek Africa Expeditions can design a customized package that combines all your desires, ensuring an unparalleled journey on the Kivu Queen Uburanga.
Things to Do on Lake Kivu While Staying on Rwanda’s Floating Hotel
Kayaking on Lake Kivu
Kayaking is one of the most enriching experiences you can have on Lake Kivu. Exploring the lake’s serene coastline by kayak allows you to soak in the stunning scenery, with the majestic mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop. As you paddle through the tranquil waters, you’ll encounter a variety of birds darting in and out of the shoreline foliage, while fishermen work diligently on their nets during the day. At sunset, you’ll witness a magical spectacle as local fishermen paddle out together, their harmonious songs echoing across the water as they embark on their evening journey, returning at dawn with their fresh catch. A sunset kayaking tour with these singing fishermen offers an unforgettable experience, complete with a chance to explore the coffee islands and even spend a night on a coffee plantation.
Relaxation on Sandy Beaches
For beach lovers, Lake Kivu offers an array of resorts and sandy beaches that provide the perfect setting for relaxation. Whether you’re vacationing with a partner or simply seeking some quiet time, these beaches invite you to unwind and enjoy the lake’s peaceful ambiance. Engage in various beach activities like beach football and volleyball, or take a refreshing swim in the lake’s clear waters. Local delicacies, including freshly caught fish and traditional Rwandan dishes, are readily available, adding to the delightful beachside experience.
Boat Cruise on Lake Kivu
A boat cruise on Lake Kivu is a must-do activity that is well worth the investment. This leisurely cruise provides an opportunity to explore some of the lake’s most enchanting islands, such as Serene Island and Amahoro Island, as well as the lush tea plantations and coffee stations scattered along the shore. You’ll also visit local fishing villages and even discover natural hot springs. As you traverse the lake, keep an eye out for the variety of birds that inhabit the shores. With no hippos or crocodiles in these waters, you can enjoy the cruise in complete safety and tranquility.
Cycling Around Lake Kivu
Known as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda is an excellent destination for cycling enthusiasts seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures. The country’s vast network of trails and roads crisscrossing the landscape makes it ideal for exploring by bike. Cycling through Rwanda’s countryside offers a unique opportunity to interact with the local rural communities while taking in the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you. The most popular route is the Congo Nile Trail, a 227-kilometer journey running parallel to the eastern shore of Lake Kivu. Beginning in Rubavu and concluding in Rusizi, this trail typically takes about five days to complete. However, if you’re short on time, you can choose to cycle shorter sections of the trail. Opting for a guided cycling tour is a fantastic way to explore the area around Lake Kivu.
