When Is the Best Time to Go on an African Safari?

Planning the perfect African safari depends largely on where you want to go and what kind of wildlife experiences you’re looking for. From the thundering herds of the Great Migration to intimate encounters with mountain gorillas, here’s a detailed guide to the best safari seasons across Africa.

1. Best Time to Visit East Africa (Kenya & Tanzania)

Ideal For: Great Migration, Big Five safaris, scenic landscapes
Best Season: June to October

This dry season is perfect for classic safari adventures. Wildlife congregates around water sources, making animals easier to spot. If witnessing the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara is on your list, plan for July to October—August being the peak.

Green Season (November to May):

This time brings lush scenery and newborn animals, especially in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. It’s also a birdwatcher’s paradise. Expect occasional rainfall, particularly from March to May.

2. Best Time to Visit Uganda & Rwanda

Ideal For: Gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, birding
Best Season: June to September, and December to February

These are the best months for primate trekking—trails are drier and more accessible, making the experience more enjoyable. Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but dry seasons offer the most comfortable conditions.

Rainy Season (March to May, October to November):
Rain can make the trails muddy and more challenging, but it’s also a quieter time in the parks. Some lodges and permits may be discounted during these months.

3. Best Time to Visit Southern Africa (Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe)

Ideal For: Game drives, mokoro safaris, remote landscapes
Best Season: May to October

The dry season offers excellent wildlife viewing as animals gather at waterholes. June to August is especially magical in Botswana’s Okavango Delta when it floods and attracts diverse wildlife.

Green Season (November to April):
Lush scenery, great birding, and fewer tourists. However, some wildlife may be harder to spot as it disperses across the landscape.

Best Time to Visit South Africa (Kruger & Beyond)

Ideal For: Big Five safaris, Cape floral displays, birding

Best Season: May to September

These cooler, drier months offer top-tier game viewing in Kruger National Park and surrounding private reserves. August and September also bring blooming wildflowers in the Cape region.

Low Season (October to April):

This is a great time for birdwatchers and those interested in baby animals, but expect warmer temperatures and occasional afternoon thunderstorms in safari areas.

Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls (Zambia & Zimbabwe)

Ideal For: Waterfall viewing, adventure activities
Best Season for the Falls: February to May

This is when the falls are at their most powerful—an awe-inspiring sight following the rains.

Low Water Season (October to December):

While the falls may be reduced (especially on the Zambian side), this is the best time for adventure lovers. Activities like white-water rafting and swimming in Devil’s Pool are more accessible.

General Safari Planning Tips

• Dry Season (June–October): Best for spotting wildlife as animals gather at rivers and waterholes.

• Green Season (November–April): Fantastic for birding, baby animals, and stunning green landscapes.

• Shoulder Seasons (May and November): Great balance of wildlife viewing, decent weather, and fewer crowds.

Each destination has its own rhythms, so choosing the right time based on your safari goals is key to having an unforgettable experience.
