Is Lowland Gorilla Trekking Safe in Kahuzi Biega National Park?
April 10, 2025Tour the Dian Fossey Grave Site and Karisoke Research Center in Volcanoes National Park
One of the most meaningful experiences in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda is the hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke Research Center. This trek offers not only a scenic adventure but also a powerful emotional journey as you learn about the legendary conservationist Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas.
The experience begins with a 30-minute drive from the park headquarters to the trailhead at Karisoke Research Center, followed by a 1.5-hour hike through beautiful rainforest terrain. Along the way, you may encounter forest hogs, a variety of monkeys, and colorful bird species, adding to the richness of the trek.
A Moving Tribute to a Conservation Hero
Visiting Dian Fossey’s final resting place is both humbling and inspiring. The trail leads to the house where she lived—and was tragically murdered in 1985. She was laid to rest near her beloved gorilla companion Digit, along with other mountain gorillas that lost their lives to poaching.
This memorial site honors Dian Fossey’s unwavering efforts to save one of the world’s most endangered species and gives visitors a deeper understanding of gorilla conservation history in Rwanda.
