How Long Does It Take to Get a Gorilla Permit in Uganda?
June 19, 2025Visiting Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking in May
Planning a trip to see mountain gorillas in Africa this May? Trekking to see gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is one of the most unforgettable wildlife encounters in the world. Nestled in the lush highlands of northern Rwanda, this protected area offers travelers a rare opportunity to spend time with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
May is a great time to experience Rwanda’s gorilla trekking adventures—offering fewer crowds and better permit availability, all while the forest is at its most vibrant. With gorilla permits in high demand year-round, planning ahead ensures you won’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter.
Why Visit Volcanoes National Park in May?
Located in the scenic Musanze region of northern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park (known locally as Parc National des Volcans) is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area that spans Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This volcanic landscape is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population and is where famed primatologist Dian Fossey conducted her groundbreaking research.
In addition to gorillas, the park shelters golden monkeys, forest hogs, bushbucks, and hundreds of bird species. Its diverse ecosystem, dramatic volcanic scenery, and deep cultural heritage make it a top destination for travelers seeking both adventure and connection with nature.
May falls within Rwanda’s green season, meaning occasional rains, lush landscapes, and fewer visitors. Trails may be muddy, but the reward is a quieter, more intimate experience with nature.
How Much Is a Rwanda Gorilla Permit?
As of 2025, the cost of a Rwanda gorilla trekking permit is USD 1,500 per person for all nationalities. This fee includes your park entry, the gorilla encounter, and the services of professional guides and trackers.
Though the cost is significant, the experience is worth every penny. Your permit fee also directly supports conservation efforts and community development projects around Volcanoes National Park.
To secure your spot, permits must be booked in advance—especially during peak seasons (January, February, July, August, September, and December). May offers a better chance of permit availability and fewer crowds, making it an ideal time for flexible travelers.
How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Each Day?
Rwanda strictly regulates gorilla trekking to ensure the safety of both gorillas and visitors. Volcanoes National Park has 12 habituated gorilla families, and only 8 people are allowed to visit each family per day. This means that only 96 gorilla trekking permits are issued daily.
Each trek begins with a morning briefing at Kinigi Headquarters at 7:00 AM, where visitors are grouped and assigned a specific gorilla family based on fitness level and interest. Guided by expert trackers and park rangers, you’ll hike through thick bamboo forests and steep terrain—sometimes for 30 minutes, sometimes several hours—depending on the gorillas’ location that day.
Once you reach the gorilla group, you’ll have one magical hour to quietly observe and photograph these incredible primates in their natural environment.
