How Much Does It Cost to Book a Gorilla Trekking Tour in Africa?
June 17, 2025Weather and Climate Guide for Gorilla Trekking in DR Congoe
Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in the Democratic Republic of Congo? Understanding the weather, seasons, and your options for trekking is key to a successful safari. Here’s everything you need to know about the climate, best times to visit, gorilla permit prices, where to go, and how to get there — all curated by Trek Africa Expeditions, your trusted specialist in East and Central Africa safaris.
Climate and Weather for Gorilla Trekking in DR Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo has a tropical climate, meaning it’s generally hot and humid year-round. However, regional and seasonal variations can impact your gorilla trekking experience:
Dry Season (June to September):
This is the most recommended time to go gorilla trekking in DR Congo. Trails are drier, less muddy, and easier to navigate. Daytime temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), while higher elevations can get cool at night. Wildlife visibility also improves during this season, making it ideal for trekking.
Wet Season (October to May):
Rainfall increases significantly during these months, leading to slippery and challenging trails. However, the lush green scenery and fewer crowds can appeal to adventurous travelers. Some areas may become inaccessible due to flooding, so planning and flexibility are essential during this period.
Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in DR Congo: Virunga vs. Kahuzi-Biega
DR Congo is one of the only three countries where you can see wild gorillas — and it offers two incredible trekking destinations:
Kahuzi-Biega National Park – Best Option for Now
Located near Bukavu in eastern Congo, Kahuzi-Biega is home to the Eastern Lowland Gorillas, the largest gorilla subspecies. This park is known for its biodiversity, pristine rainforest, and more stable conditions compared to Virunga. Due to ongoing security issues in Virunga, Kahuzi-Biega is currently the safer and more accessible option for gorilla trekking in Congo.
Virunga National Park – Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Virunga, Africa’s oldest national park, is set against a backdrop of volcanoes and dramatic landscapes. It is home to Mountain Gorillas, the same species found in Rwanda and Uganda. However, due to periodic instability and security risks, we advise checking current safety updates before planning a visit.
Gorilla Trekking Permit Prices in DR Congo
To participate in a gorilla trek, you must purchase a gorilla permit. Trek Africa Expeditions will assist in checking availability, securing your permit, and arranging all travel logistics on your behalf. Here are the current prices:
Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Eastern Lowland Gorillas):
-
Non-Residents – $400 per person
-
East African Residents – $200 per person
-
Congolese Citizens – $20 per person
Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas):
-
High Season (Mid-Dec to Mid-Mar & June to Oct): $400 per person
-
Low Season (Mid-Mar to Mid-May & Mid-Oct to Mid-Dec): $200 per person
Permits are limited and often sell out months in advance — especially for Kahuzi-Biega, which has only two trekking groups. We recommend booking at least 5 months ahead of your travel date.
Best Time to Visit Congo for Gorilla Trekking
The best time to visit DR Congo for gorilla trekking is during the dry months of December to February and June to September. These months offer better trail conditions and easier gorilla sightings due to less dense vegetation.
Wet months like March to May and October to November are considered low season. While trekking is still possible, conditions are more challenging, and sightings may be obscured by thick forest growth. That said, low season comes with discounted permits in Virunga, making it a budget-friendly option for experienced adventurers.
