Nestled in the central Batéké Plateau region, approximately 150 kilometers north of Brazzaville, Lesio Louna Gorilla Reserve spans around 173,000 hectares. This reserve includes the southern section of the former Léfini Faunal Reserve, creating a diverse landscape that supports a variety of habitats. Roughly two-thirds of the reserve is covered by non-wooded or lightly wooded grasslands. The eastern boundary features dramatic escarpments and cliffs that support dry mixed forests, while the rivers and waterways are lined with gallery and swamp forests. This rich tapestry of environments is ideal for both savannah and forest-dwelling animals.
Since the reintroduction of Critically Endangered western lowland gorillas, the reserve has seen an increase in other species such as hippopotamuses, red river hogs, forest buffaloes, and various duiker species. Birdlife is also abundant, with rare sightings of the black-headed bee-eater and regular visits from migratory Abdim’s storks.
Lesio Louna Gorilla Reserve is accessible throughout the year, but the period from June to October is particularly recommended. This is due to the drier conditions during these months, which make trekking easier and more enjoyable. The tropical climate of the Congo results in frequent rains year-round, similar to the weather patterns in Virunga National Park and Kahuzi Beiga National Park.
The dry season—spanning December, January, February, June, July, August, and September—is optimal for gorilla trekking. During these months, the trails are less muddy, and the vegetation is less dense, which improves visibility and overall trekking conditions. Conversely, the wet season—March, April, May, October, and November—brings heavier rains and thicker vegetation, making the trails slippery and more challenging for trekking.
Visiting Lesio Louna Gorilla Reserve is generally safe. Although the Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced various challenges, including civil unrest and disease outbreaks, the situation has improved significantly. The reserve is monitored closely, and we provide up-to-date security information to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
