April 4, 20257-Day Congo Bonobo Trekking Adventure – Explore Bonobos in the Wild
Join our 7-Day Congo Bonobo Trekking Adventure for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see bonobos in their natural habitat—deep in the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This unforgettable journey takes you through raw, untouched wilderness along the Congo River to the remote Tshumbiri region in Mai-Ndombe Province. The bonobo, one of our closest relatives with over 99% shared DNA, is found only in the DR Congo, making this a truly rare wildlife encounter.
This isn’t your typical safari—this is a real expedition into wild Africa. You’ll travel by speedboat and 4WD, meet remote river communities, and immerse yourself in a way of life that’s remained largely unchanged for generations. If you’re up for adventure and open to nature’s unpredictability, this bonobo trekking tour is both challenging and deeply rewarding.
Because of the high cost of transportation and logistics in this remote area, this trip is offered as an open group tour to keep it affordable. Our next group departs July 10th–16th, 2024, with a minimum of 5 travelers required to confirm. A $1,000 deposit secures your spot and is fully refundable if the group doesn’t reach capacity.

What to Expect on This Congo Bonobo Trekking Adventure
This is not your average African safari. Trekking bonobos in the wild takes you into one of the most remote and untouched parts of Africa. You’ll journey into the Congo’s dense tropical forest, where the bonobo—our closest living relative with 99% shared DNA—still thrives in its natural habitat. Bonobos are only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, making this one of the rarest primate trekking experiences in the world.
The landscapes are raw, wild, and incredibly beautiful. You’ll travel by river, walk forest trails, and meet local communities who have preserved their traditional ways of life. It’s a challenging trip, but for those willing to embrace the unpredictability of the Congo, the rewards are immense.
This is not the Africa of Kenya or South Africa. It’s deeper, rougher, and real.
Where Can You See Bonobos in the Wild?
This tour gives you the rare opportunity to observe bonobos in the wild within the Mai-Ndombe Forest in western DR Congo. This vast forest spans more than 10 million hectares and is home to towering trees, rich biodiversity, and the Bateke and Téké communities who live along the Congo River.
Our bonobo trekking is done in partnership with local communities in Bolobo Territory, about 300 km north of Kinshasa. In the villages of Nkala and the surrounding area, bonobos are protected due to local taboos that forbid hunting them. One belief holds that the bonobo was once human and retreated to the forest after failing to repay a debt. You’ll not only encounter rare wildlife but also learn about the fascinating cultural stories and beliefs that shape local conservation practices.
How to Get to Tshumbiri and Nkala
Option 1: Speedboat from Kinshasa to Tshumbiri
This is the quickest and most comfortable way to reach Tshumbiri. Depart from a private port in Kinshasa and arrive in approximately 4 hours.
Option 2: Motorized Wooden Canoe
A more immersive, though longer, option. Depart early in the morning for a full-day, 12-hour river journey. You’ll witness daily life on the Congo River, passing villages, markets, and fishing boats. It’s a rich cultural experience in itself.
Final Leg: Tshumbiri to Nkala by Jeep
Upon arrival in Tshumbiri, transfer by 4WD jeep for a two-hour drive on a dirt road to reach Nkala village, the base for your bonobo trekking.
Where You’ll Stay
Accommodation on this tour is basic and rustic, in keeping with the remote nature of the journey.
-
In Kinshasa and Mbandaka, you’ll stay in modest but comfortable hotels.
-
In the forest villages, you’ll sleep in spacious tents on the ground, equipped with air mattresses.
-
There is no running water and no mobile phone reception (unless you bring a satellite phone).
-
We provide solar panels for limited charging of camera batteries.
This is wild camping with a purpose—and an experience you’ll never forget.
What Trekking in the Forest Is Like
Bonobo trekking involves hiking narrow jungle trails that may be overgrown or flooded. Be prepared to:
-
Walk through knee-deep water
-
Climb over logs, roots, and rocks
-
Encounter biting ants (tuck pants into socks!)
-
Carry your own water, snacks, and rain protection
On Trekking Day:
-
Wake up at 3–4 a.m.
-
Hike 1–3 hours through dense forest to reach the bonobo nesting sites before sunrise
-
Wait quietly near the nests until the bonobos awaken and begin moving
-
Follow the group as they forage, socialize, and move through the forest canopy
(group sizes vary between 3–20 individuals)
Trekking usually lasts 3–4 hours, depending on where the bonobos go. You’ll then return to the village or camp for lunch and relaxation.
Note: Sometimes the bonobos remain high in the trees, making photography difficult. Your guide will help you get the best possible views while respecting their space.
