Exploring the Differences between Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Bwindi Gorilla Habituation Experience

When it comes to gorilla trekking experiences, there are two main options available: gorilla trekking in Rwanda and gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. Although both experiences have a similar cost of $1,500 per permit, they offer very different experiences.

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking experience is considered to be a luxurious adventure due to the cost of permits, making it more suitable for luxury clients and not for budget travelers. On the other hand, the gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a new activity introduced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority in the Rushaga sector, south of the park. It also costs $1,500 per permit, but the main goal of this experience is to give clients more time with the gorillas, allowing four hours in their natural habitat, compared to the one hour allowed in normal gorilla trekking.

Both options have the same price for the permits, but it is important to compare the two activities and study them before making a decision.

When comparing Rwandan gorilla trekking and Bwindi gorilla habituation, it is important to consider the benefits of each experience and how they differ in terms of cost. Both experiences cost USD 1500, but there is a significant difference in the amount of time spent with the gorillas. With Rwanda’s gorilla trekking, visitors are only able to spend one hour with a group of mountain gorillas, while the gorilla habituation trip in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Uganda, allows visitors to spend up to four hours with semi-habituated mountain gorillas.

Gorilla habituation is the process of gradually introducing gorillas to human presence. This experience allows visitors to not only spend more time with gorillas, but also to actively participate in the habituation process, unlike gorilla trekking which is limited to observing and photography of gorillas in their natural habitat. Therefore, it’s the choice of the clients to either choose gorilla trekking in Rwanda for shorter time with gorillas or visit Uganda for gorilla habituation experience and spend more time with the gorillas while they are still under habituation.

When comparing gorilla habituation and Rwanda gorilla trekking, it is also important to consider the number of people allowed to participate in each experience on a given day. Rwanda gorilla trekking allows a maximum of 8 people to visit one habituated gorilla family per day for a period of one hour from the time of the encounter. On the other hand, the Gorilla habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, allows a maximum of four people to visit each gorilla family that is still under habituation.
