There are abundant opportunities for tourists to immerse themselves in the stunning natural environment of Mgahinga National Park in Uganda. This national park is particularly renowned for being one of only two in Uganda that are home to mountain gorillas. Situated in the southwestern region of Uganda on the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this small yet captivating national park forms an extension of the three gorillas national park in the Virunga mountain ranges.
Within the lush bamboo forests of Mgahinga National Park, visitors can marvel at a single family of habituated mountain gorillas that roam freely. The park is also home to various bird species, as well as a variety of forest-dwelling wildlife such as the golden monkey. This is the sole national park in Uganda where mountain gorillas and golden monkeys coexist, making it a unique destination for nature lovers.
Located in southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga National Park offers a plethora of exciting activities for visitors to explore. Among the park’s most popular activities is gorilla trekking, with one of the best-known groups being the Nyakagezi family. This habituated mountain gorilla family is known for being easy to photograph and spot, making it a must-see for visitors.
The Nyakagezi family, which now resides permanently on the Uganda side of the park, comprises 14 members that roam through Mgahinga’s beautiful bamboo forests. With only one gorilla family in the area, eight gorilla permits are available for booking daily. These permits can be reserved in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices in Kampala.
If you’re interested in trekking the Mgahinga mountain gorillas, simply provide us with your preferred trekking dates, and we’ll check permit availability. Trek Africa Expeditions can tentatively reserve your permit and send an invoice for payment, after which we’ll pay for the permit and send you scanned copies of receipts from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Please note that we can only book Mgahinga gorilla permits for visitors who book an all-inclusive gorilla or Uganda safari with us. We offer various Uganda safari packages that visit Mgahinga and can also customize a safari experience that suits your interests, budget, and time constraints.
While gorilla trekking is the most well-known activity in Mgahinga National Park, there are many other experiences to be had in the park, such as golden monkey trekking. This is the only national park where visitors can see and trek golden monkeys in their natural habitat. Golden monkey permits can be obtained at the park headquarters in Mgahinga, and unlike gorilla trekking permits, there is no minimum number of people required.
Trek Africa Expeditions offers safari packages that include golden monkey trekking, and we are happy to provide information and answer any questions you may have. With a golden monkey trekking permit, visitors can spend an hour observing the habits of habituated families of golden monkeys, with the added bonus of park entry fees and a ranger guide’s services included in the permit.
If you’re seeking a unique wildlife adventure, consider the golden monkey habituation experience, which is only available in Mgahinga National Park. This exciting activity allows you to spend more than an hour observing golden monkeys that are still under habituation.
The experience starts at the park headquarters and takes around half a day, depending on how long it takes to locate the golden monkeys. Trek Africa Expeditions is always available to discuss the details of the golden monkey habituation experience and to answer any questions you may have.

Mgahinga National Park, a natural paradise in Uganda, can be accessed via two road trip options or by flying into Kisoro. The most convenient and comfortable way to get to the park is by landing in Kigali, Rwanda and driving for 4-5 hours through the Chanika border. This route is the shortest, and visitors will appreciate the smooth journey to Mgahinga National Park. However, if you choose to fly into Rwanda, you must comply with visa and border crossing regulations for both Uganda and Rwanda.
Alternatively, visitors can access Mgahinga National Park from Entebbe International Airport, the main entry point for Uganda. Travelers who arrive in Entebbe can take a long 8-10 hour drive past the equator, Mbarara, Kabale and onward to Kisoro town, then to the park headquarters.
For those who do not prefer long-distance driving, flying from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip is a viable option. Upon landing, you can take a road transfer to the park headquarters, where you can then begin your Mgahinga National Park adventure.
