Explore the diverse Gorilla Groups in Ruhija Sector, positioned on the eastern side of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This sector is renowned for hosting four distinct gorilla families, each offering a unique and enchanting experience for visitors. The gorilla families in Ruhija sector include the Bitukura Gorilla family, Oruzogo family, Mukiza, and Kyaguriro family.
The Bitukura Gorilla Family, habituated in 2007, comprises 14 individuals, including four silverbacks. This family dynamic includes four adult females, two juveniles, three infants, and one baby. Originally consisting of 24 individuals, the group experienced disputes and fights, leading some members to relocate to other areas.
Consisting of 17 individuals with one silverback, the Oruzogo Gorilla family has become a favored site for tourists due to the joyful and playful nature of its members. Opened for tourism in 2011, this family provides entertaining encounters for visitors.
Comprising 20 individuals, the Kyaguliro Gorilla family is typically reserved for research purposes and is not frequently visited by tourists. Following the sudden death of one silverback struck by lightning, the family split into two groups. Kyaguliro “A” is led by Rukara, consisting of 10 family members, while Kyaguliro “B” is headed by Mukiza and comprises 10 members.
The Mukiza Gorilla family, led by the dominant Silverback Mukiza, was formed in May 2016 after the split of the parent Kyaguliro group. Dedicated to gorilla research by the Manx Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-Evan), the Mukiza group currently includes 13 individuals – 1 Silverback, 6 Adult females, 1 Sub-adult, 2 Juveniles, and 3 Infants.
