Updated Nyungwe National Park Fees — As of January 1st, 2023, Nyungwe National Park will implement new tourism pricing, subject to review every two years. This adjustment comes after more than a decade since the last update, following the mandate given to Nyungwe Management Company (NMC) in October 2020 to oversee the park’s management fully. The existing pricing structure, maintained until the end of 2022, will undergo revision to align with the evolving needs of tourism and hospitality within and around Nyungwe.
Under the leadership of NMC, a crucial priority has been the formulation of an inclusive Tourism Development Plan (TDP) guiding all tourism and hospitality initiatives in the region. The proposed pricing changes for 2023 stem from the TDP, considering anticipated enhancements in tourism offerings and accommodations. Currently, approximately 35% of visitors to Nyungwe are nationals. With the revised pricing strategy and improved facilities, the aim is to boost the percentage of national visitors to at least 50%, with an additional 15-20% comprising residents. The 2023 pricing structure aims to encourage longer stays, featuring higher entry fees for the initial day or night and reduced fees for subsequent stays.
Entry fees have been newly introduced and vary based on visitor category and length of stay in the park. Notably, entry fees will not apply to travelers staying beyond three days up to one week.
For Rwandan or East African Community (EAC) citizens, adults will pay USD 10 (RWF 10,000) per person for a one-day/night visit, USD 15 (RWF 15,000) for two nights, and only USD 20 (20,000) for a three-night stay. Children aged 6-12 will be charged half the adult rate for stays of 1, 2, and 3 nights, while children below 6 years will have free access.
Foreign residents in Rwanda or the East African Community will pay USD 60 per person for a one-night visit, USD 90 for two nights, and USD 120 per person for three nights. Rates are halved for children aged 6-12. These same rates apply to citizens of other African countries outside the East African Community.
International visitors to Nyungwe Forest National Park will be charged USD 100 per person for a one-day/night visit, USD 150 per person for two days, and USD 200 per person for three nights. Children aged 6-12 will pay half of these rates.
Chimpanzee tracking fees at Nyungwe Forest National Park vary by visitor category. Rwandan or EAC citizens will pay USD 25, while EAC forest residents will pay USD 75, and international visitors will be charged USD 150 per person per trek.
For visitors seeking unique experiences beyond standard entry, Nyungwe National Park offers special activities such as canopy walks, primate treks, birding, and hiking, each with its associated fee structure.
Rwandan or East African Community (EAC) Citizens will be charged USD 5 for participation in canopy walks, primate treks (excluding chimpanzee trekking), forest birding, and hiking. Foreign residents in the EAC will pay USD 20, while international visitors will incur a fee of USD 40.
Opting for an annual pass grants multiple entries to Nyungwe Forest National Park over one year. Rwandan or EAC Citizens can obtain an individual/single pass for RWF 95,000 or a couple pass for RWF 150,000. Alternatively, families (comprising 2 adults and 2 children) can secure a pass for RWF 205,000.
For Foreign residents in the EAC, the single pass is priced at USD 300, the couple pass at USD 500, and the family pass at USD800.
Guides and porters engaged from the park reception before 9 am and returned within 5 hours are considered a half-day activity. Those picked up after 9 am are charged for a full day, unless returned before midday. Additional fees of 15,000 RWF apply for guides accompanying visitors on multi-day walking trails, covering accommodation and food for up to 3 nights. Similarly, porters on multi-day treks incur an extra 15,000 RWF for accommodation and food, with a supplementary charge of 5,000 RWF per additional night.
Safety measures dictate that for every 8 tourists (excluding children under 5), a guide is mandatory to ensure visitor safety and effective communication of information.
Entry fees are inclusive of any trails accessed within Nyungwe National Park. Day visitors pay per entry, while overnight visitors pay per night spent inside the park. The fee reduces by 50% for the second and third nights and becomes free for subsequent nights up to one week. Children under 5 enter free of charge, while activity fees apply to those aged 6-12. Visitors staying outside the park pay the entry fee for each day of entry unless accommodated in approved park-affiliated lodgings.
Nyungwe Management Company, in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board, announces the updated tourism pricing effective from January 1st, 2023. This initiative aims to simplify pricing for visitors, aligning it with neighboring parks and encouraging longer guest stays without significant cost escalation.
Enhancements in tourism offerings include the introduction of an accessible park entry fee, annual pass options, and facilitation for domestic visitors. Additionally, new activities such as multi-day walks and zip line courses are being introduced.
