Chimpanzees undergo a habituation process lasting nearly five years, during which researchers closely follow them, acclimating them to human presence. These primates form large communities led by a dominant male, displaying territorial behavior with defined boundaries. Occasionally, Chimpanzees split into smaller groups, especially during feeding, later regrouping and engaging in mutual grooming. While not every trek guarantees encountering the entire community, sightings often include five to seven members. Visitors are permitted to spend one hour observing and marveling at these magnificent creatures. Each Chimpanzee is individually named by researchers, adding a personal touch to the experience.

Embarking on Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

On the day of your Chimpanzee trekking adventure, you rise early, partake in a hearty breakfast, and rendezvous with your guide. Your journey unfolds as you transfer to Kanyanchu Visitor’s Center, the park offices, where a comprehensive briefing outlines the dos and don’ts of Chimpanzee tracking. Subsequently, you’re grouped with fellow adventurers, forming small teams of six people. An assigned ranger guide leads your expedition, guiding you through the forest. The trek may involve driving to the starting point or embarking on a hike, depending on the Chimpanzees’ location. Armed rangers accompany trekkers for safety, considering the presence of wild Chimpanzees unaccustomed to human interaction and other wildlife, such as elephants. After locating the Chimpanzees, you are granted one hour to observe their natural behaviors before returning to the park offices or your lodge.

Chimpanzee tracking is conducted twice daily, with morning (AM) and afternoon (PM) shifts, as indicated on the visitor’s permit. For a more immersive experience, the Habituation Experience allows you to spend the entire day with Chimpanzees, starting early in the morning at around 6:30 AM. This extended encounter provides a deeper understanding of Chimpanzee behaviors and daily activities, following them from their morning routine until they nest for the night. Note that Chimpanzee tracking requires a minimum level of fitness due to its strenuous nature.

Essentials for Chimpanzee Tracking:

To partake in Chimpanzee tracking, individuals must be above the age of 15 and possess a minimum level of physical fitness. Prior physical exercise is recommended before tracking. Essential clothing includes a hat or cap, sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, long stockings, rain gear or a poncho, hiking shoes or boots, insect repellent, and hand gloves. A small backpack to carry drinking water and packed lunch is advised, and lodges typically provide the latter on tracking days. Additionally, Chimpanzee tracking permits are a requisite, costing USD150.00 per person per trek, while the Chimpanzee Habituation permit is priced at USD200.00 per person per trek.

Obtaining Chimpanzee Tracking and Habituation Permits:

Chimpanzee permits are exclusively issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the government body overseeing Uganda’s National Parks.
