Things to Do in Semuliki National Park
Birdwatching at its Best
Semuliki National Park is a bird lover’s dream come true, with its rich array of bird species. The park is home to numerous exotic birds, such as the Spot-breasted Ibis, Chestnut-flanked Goshawk, and the African Dwarf Kingfisher. With over 300 bird species recorded, Semuliki is one of the best birding destinations in Uganda, offering sightings of rare species like the Western Bronze-napped Pigeon, the Nkulengu Rail, and the Gabon Woodpecker.
Visit the Sempaya Hot Springs
A visit to Semuliki National Park isn’t complete without experiencing the famous Sempaya Hot Springs. The “male” spring, Bintente, is a serene 12-meter wide natural pool. The “female” spring, Nyasimbi, is a powerful boiling geyser, reaching temperatures of 103°C and spouting steam up to 2 meters high. Historically, locals cooked their meals in these boiling waters, and today, visitors can try their hand at boiling eggs or matoke (plantains) in the springs. This geothermal feature also holds a deep cultural significance for the local communities.
Game Drives in Toro Semuliki Wildlife Reserve
For a classic African safari experience, head over to Toro Semuliki Wildlife Reserve, which is adjacent to Semuliki National Park. This expansive reserve features three main tracks across savannah grasslands, where you can spot Forest Elephants, Uganda Kob, waterbuck, and buffalo. With some luck, you may even encounter more elusive animals like pygmy hippos and leopards. Game drives can be enjoyed at various times of the day, including night drives, when nocturnal creatures like the white-tailed mongoose come out to play.
Cultural and Community Encounters
Semuliki National Park offers a unique opportunity to connect with local cultures. The Batwa people, who depend on the forest for survival, share their traditions through music, dance, and craftsmanship at Ntandi. They also sell intricate handmade crafts, which provide insight into their rich cultural history. You can also experience the construction of a traditional boma (village), where the Batwa demonstrate how they lived in the forest in times past.
Nature and Forest Walks
For those who love wilderness adventures, Semuliki National Park offers some of the best nature walks in Uganda. The 13-kilometer Kirumia Nature Walk takes you through the heart of the forest, culminating at the Semuliki River. This 8-hour round trip is especially popular with birdwatchers. Another fascinating route is the 11-kilometer Red Monkey Track, which runs along the park’s eastern border and offers sightings of the rare deBrazza’s monkey.
Where to Stay in Semuliki National Park
Although Semuliki National Park doesn’t have a wide variety of lodges or hotels, there are a few excellent options for accommodation. Semuliki Safari Lodge is a luxury facility located within the park, offering a truly immersive experience. For those seeking a more mid-range option, Amaraga Lodge, located just outside the park, is a great choice. Many visitors also opt to stay in the nearby town of Fort Portal, which offers several comfortable hotels like Mountains of the Moon Hotel, Nyaika Hotel, and Fort Motel. We can help you find the best rooms and book complimentary services to ensure you have a memorable stay.
How to Access Semuliki National Park
Semuliki National Park is easily accessible by road, with the most direct route being from Kampala to Fort Portal via the Mubende highway (about 465 km). From Fort Portal, travel 28 km towards Semuliki National Park before turning right at Karugutu Trading Centre and continuing to the park entrance. For visitors wishing to fly, there is an airstrip managed by Uganda Wildlife Authority, where you can charter flights through Aero Link Uganda, landing directly at Semuliki Safari Lodge.
Best Time to Visit Semuliki National Park
The best time to visit Semuliki National Park is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to March. These months offer pleasant weather conditions with minimal rainfall, making outdoor activities easier and more enjoyable. The dry season also allows for better wildlife viewing, as the animals tend to congregate around water sources. If you’re a birdwatcher, however, the rainy season can also be an excellent time to visit, as the abundance of food attracts even more bird species, making sightings more frequent and easier.
