Dian Fossey and other dedicated conservationists have left an indelible mark on Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas, capturing the hearts and minds of travelers worldwide. For those whose ultimate travel dream involves encountering these gentle yet endangered creatures in their natural habitat, the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is the place to be.
Efforts to safeguard Mountain Gorillas from habitat destruction, poaching, and other threats have yielded an extraordinary infrastructure. This infrastructure not only ensures the survival of Gorillas in today’s modern world but also paves the way for their thriving existence for generations to come. The Rwandan government, mindful of the Gorillas’ wellbeing, restricts the number of visitors allowed to observe them. Rwanda offers year-round opportunities for Gorilla tracking. However, the best times to visit are during the drier seasons, spanning from December to early March and from June to September. December to March constitutes an extended dry season, with temperatures occasionally reaching 29 degrees Celsius. Conversely, the months of March to mid-May and July to September are characterized by rainy weather.
The dry season is particularly favorable for Gorilla tours, as there is minimal rain during treks and the rainforest terrain is more conducive for hiking. While the weather is generally pleasant during these months, it’s advisable to carry waterproof clothing due to the unpredictable nature of Rwanda’s Equatorial climate. Keep in mind that the dry season is also a peak tourist season, potentially resulting in higher prices for accommodation, car rentals, and other services.
On the other hand, travelers on a budget may find value in visiting during the wet season. During this period, hotels typically have lower occupancy rates, translating to discounted food and lodging. Moreover, the reduced demand for Gorilla permits offers a higher chance of observing these endangered species without competition.
Participating in Gorilla tracking within the dense jungles of Volcanoes National Park requires careful coordination due to the limited number of permits issued each day. Partnering with Trek Africa Expeditions ensures a captivating experience with these magnificent creatures. Our consultants work closely with you to craft a personalized travel itinerary that aligns with your interests. From securing the necessary Gorilla permit, priced at USD 1500 per person per trek, to handling all logistics on tracking day, we have you covered.
