Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
One of the biggest draws of Volcanoes National Park is its world-famous mountain gorillas. Every day, visitors embark on a thrilling gorilla trekking adventure to observe these endangered primates in their natural habitat. The park has 10 habituated gorilla families, and only 8 visitors are allowed to trek each family per day. This ensures an intimate experience with these incredible animals. Your chances of seeing the gorillas are incredibly high—99%—as the trekking is guided by experienced trackers, guides, and park rangers.
The trek begins with a briefing at Kinigi at 7:00 AM, where you’ll receive important guidelines on how to interact with the gorillas. While gorillas share 99% of their DNA with humans, they remain wild, so it’s essential to follow the rules for a safe and respectful experience. The trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location and movement of the gorillas. To participate, you’ll need to secure a gorilla permit from the Rwanda Development Board, which costs USD 1500. This permit allows you one hour with the gorillas for photography and observation.
Booking your gorilla trek through Trek Africa Expeditions ensures that you’ll have a memorable and affordable experience with personalized planning.

Golden Monkey Trekking
Volcanoes National Park is also home to the golden monkeys, a rare and beautiful species found only in a few parts of the world. Visitors can enjoy golden monkey trekking, where you’ll observe these playful primates in their natural habitat. The park is home to two habituated golden monkey communities, each with about 80 members. Unlike gorilla trekking, there is no limit to the number of visitors who can take part in this activity.
A golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 for all nationals and is available through the Rwanda Development Board. The activity starts with a briefing at the park headquarters at 7:00 AM, followed by a trek led by park guides and rangers. The walk may take 30 minutes to several hours depending on the location of the monkeys. Once you find the golden monkeys, you’ll be allowed to spend one hour observing and photographing them.

Dian Fossey Tomb Hike
One of the most historic activities in Volcanoes National Park is the Dian Fossey Tomb Hike. This hike, lasting around 1 hour, takes visitors to the Karisoke Research Center and the final resting place of the famous primatologist Dian Fossey. Fossey dedicated her life to protecting the endangered mountain gorillas and is also renowned for her work in the movie “Gorillas in the Mist”. The hike, which covers 2,500m to 3,000m, offers incredible insights into Fossey’s life and legacy, while commemorating her dedication to gorilla conservation.
