Nestled in the northern realm of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, the Buhoma Mubare Gorilla Family stands as an iconic symbol of resilience and continuity. This renowned family, the first to be tracked by tourists in 1993, recently welcomed a new member into their midst on the 7th of November, 2019.
Originally led by the formidable alpha male, Kanyonyi, Mubare faced a turning point when Kanyonyi suffered an injury from a fall, rendering him unable to defend his family. Seizing this vulnerability, another Silverback named Malaya claimed leadership. In a tragic turn of events, Malaya, in his bid for dominance, eliminated all juveniles and babies from the previous leadership, securing control over the females.
After a period of solitude, Malaya managed to regroup the females, forming a new Mubare Gorilla family. Despite the turbulent past, stability returned to the family, and today, the lineage persists. In a heartening development on the morning of the 7th of November, 2019, at approximately 6:00 AM, Karungi, one of the females, gave birth to a new baby.
The Mubare Gorilla Family now comprises eight members, with Malaya serving as the Silverback, and the females – Karungi, Nyampazi, Twesiime, and Buzinza. Among them are three adorable babies: one at nine months, another at three weeks, and the newest addition, born just today. Both the newborn and mother Karungi are reported to be in good health and excellent condition, marking a delightful continuation for the oldest gorilla family in Bwindi forest.
