The Ndere Dance Troupe, fondly known as the “Flute Troupe,” invites you to delve into the vibrant cultural traditions of Uganda. The very name “Ndere” carries profound symbolism, representing beauty and universal unity.
The flute, regarded as a vessel of unparalleled beauty, is a source of exquisite music that resonates with emotions ranging from sorrow to joy, and from love to solitude, transcending various African traditions. It stands as a testament to the shared heritage of all peoples around the world, as the flute is a cultural thread that binds us together, much like the blood flowing in our bodies, irrespective of our external differences. The Ndere Troupe takes pride in highlighting our commonalities while celebrating the rich tapestry of our differences.
Established in 1986 by Rawangyezi Stephen, the Ndere Troupe has grown to become a beacon of cultural development in Uganda. This remarkable institution has not only preserved and promoted the nation’s cultural heritage but has also provided employment opportunities to numerous young talents at the Ndere Centre.
In Africa’s historical context, the absence of written words meant that the continent’s cultural history, knowledge, and wisdom were transmitted across generations through the performing arts, encompassing music, dance, storytelling, and poetry. The Ndere Troupe upholds this tradition by presenting over 40 authentic Ugandan dances and songs, accompanied by a diverse array of indigenous percussive, stringed, and wind instruments.
Beyond entertainment, the Troupe actively engages in projects that educate younger generations about traditional forms of entertainment and harnesses these traditional platforms to disseminate knowledge on contemporary issues such as modern farming techniques and HIV/AIDS awareness.
As Uganda’s cultural ambassadors, the multi-award-winning Ndere Troupe has graced stages worldwide for nearly a quarter of a century. Their high-quality performances have garnered international acclaim and recognition. The Troupe has created indelible memories for countless individuals and organizations, having performed at various milestones in their lives, including graduations, weddings, anniversaries, dinners, launches, conferences, expositions, festivals, and state functions, to name just a few.
With a talented ensemble of over 60 artists, the Ndere Troupe is poised to continue shaping Ugandan culture and performance, taking it to new heights.
