Gabon Gorilla Trekking Adventure: Loango National Park
If you’re planning a gorilla trekking trip in Gabon, you’ll need at least 7 days to make the most of your visit. Start and end your journey in Libreville, the capital of Gabon, with the help of Trek Africa Expeditions.
Gabon Gorilla Trekking Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Libreville – Radisson Blu Okoume Palace Hotel
Arrive at Libreville’s Leon Mba International Airport, where you’ll be warmly greeted by our team. After clearing immigration, enjoy a short 25-minute transfer to your hotel, Radisson Blu Okoume Palace, where you can relax and prepare for your adventure. Enjoy dinner and spend the night at the hotel.
Day 2: Libreville – Port Gentil – Loango National Park (Ndola Lodge)
Catch an early flight to Port Gentil, where you’ll board a 4WD vehicle for a scenic 4-hour drive to Loango National Park. After reaching the park by midday, if you’re up for it, you’ll embark on a forest walk for a game drive. Experience the park’s unique wildlife, including elephants, gorillas, and other rare species. Spend the night at Ndola Lodge.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Loango National Park – Ndola to Yatouga
After breakfast, head to Yatouga Research Camp by powered canoe for a 2-hour voyage. This area is famous for its resident group of Western Lowland Gorillas, with a 95% chance of an encounter. During the wet season, gorillas stay closer to water sources, making the trek easier and faster (about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours). Spend an hour observing the gorillas, their social dynamics, and family life. Afterward, sail further south through the park to Akaka Forest, a pristine rainforest with plenty of wildlife, including Red River Hogs and Sitatunga antelopes. After the day’s adventure, return to Ndola Lodge for dinner and relaxation.
Day 4: Game Drive in Loango – Ndola to Louri Wilderness Camp
Start your day with a game drive in Loango National Park, where you’ll encounter a variety of species like Dwarf Buffaloes, Chimpanzees, and Forest Elephants. After the drive, enjoy lunch before heading to Louri, another section of the park. You can reach Louri Wilderness Camp either by boat, road, or a combination of both. This remote camp offers an intimate experience, with chances to spot wildlife like hippos and elephants. Spend the night at Louri Wilderness Camp, where you’ll feel immersed in nature’s beauty.
Day 5: Explore Louri – Ndola Lodge
Enjoy a full day exploring Louri, the savannah region of Loango National Park, famous for its “surfing hippos.” Here, you’ll also encounter gorillas, elephants, and more. Louri Wilderness Camp is a cozy, intimate camp that offers elevated views of the Louri Lagoon and an immersive wildlife experience. After a day of safari adventures, return to Ndola Lodge for your overnight stay.
Day 6: Exploring Loango National Park – Transfer to Libreville
On the final morning of your safari, we’ll venture out for one last exploration of Loango National Park. This may include a forest hike through the coastal forests, giving you another chance to spot wildlife in their natural habitat. After the hike, we’ll return to the lodge for a delicious lunch.
In the afternoon, we’ll board our vehicle and drive to Port Gentil, passing through Liambissi and expecting to arrive in the evening. From Port Gentil, we’ll take a short 30-minute domestic flight to Libreville. Once in Libreville, our team will welcome you and transfer you to the Radisson Blu Okoume Palace Hotel for a restful night.
