Visit Batwa Pygmies of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — While exploring the captivating realms of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks during your Gorilla tracking tours, make sure to delve into the fascinating Batwa Experience/Pygmies walk. This cultural excursion is a must-try activity that provides unique insights into the heritage of the Batwa people, also known as Pygmies.
Long before Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park attained its status as a National Park in 1993, the forest was home to the Batwa people, recognized as the original dwellers and guardians of this tropical rainforest. Relocated from the forest to nearby villages and towns after its gazettement, the Batwa people had traditionally depended on the forest for survival, hunting with spears and arrows, and gathering plants and fruits for sustenance. They constructed huts using natural resources from the forest, living harmoniously with the wildlife, including forest elephants, chimpanzees, and mountain gorillas.
The declaration of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park as a World Heritage Site led to the expulsion of the Batwa people from the forest, drastically altering their way of life and putting their existence at risk. Struggling to adapt to a life outside the forest, they faced challenges without land or their accustomed surroundings.
The Batwa Experience/Pygmies walk is conducted in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, specifically in the Buhoma sector in the northern part and the Nkuringo sector in the south. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is situated in southwestern Uganda and consists of four Gorilla tracking sectors. To participate in the Batwa Experience, Gorilla permits for either Buhoma or Nkuringo sectors need to be booked.
No park entry fees are required for the Batwa Experience. The activity takes place adjacent to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, not inside the National Park itself.
The Batwa Experience commences from the Batwa Craft shop and office located in Buhoma trading center, a short distance from the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park gate. Similarly, the experience starts from the Nkuringo sector, directly opposite the National Park gate.
The Batwa Experience costs USD80 for an individual, USD70 per person in a group of two to three people, and USD60 per person in a group of four or more people. Filming the program incurs an additional cost of USD400 per day per group.
The activity spans up to 5 hours, encompassing both the journey to and from the experience, as well as the actual interaction. The timing is flexible, and participants can join either a morning or afternoon group. The latest departure time from the Batwa offices is 2:00 pm.
The walk is moderately strenuous, with some steep parts that are manageable. The trail is well-maintained, and guides ensure a comfortable pace. While not recommended for individuals with significant mobility issues or severe health problems, the walk provides an enriching experience.
Participants are advised to bring cameras, drinking water, energy-giving snacks, and a packed lunch for those desiring an extended experience. Hiking boots, garden gloves, long-sleeved shirts, and long trousers are essential. A rain jacket, coats, and insect repellents are recommended, considering changing weather conditions.
The Batwa Experience accommodates a minimum of one person and a maximum of twelve people. Twenty-four people can participate in the experience per day, with twelve in the morning and twelve in the afternoon.
