Nestled in the southwestern embrace of Uganda lie two sanctuaries that harbor the majestic Mountain Gorillas – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park stands as a guardian to half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorilla population, making it a cornerstone of global conservation efforts. Remarkably, within this wilderness, Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees coexist harmoniously, crafting a unique narrative of shared habitat. A remarkable experience awaits those who seek to meet these gentle giants, a privilege granted through acquiring a Gorilla permit at a cost of USD800 per person per trek. It is important to note that, effective from 1st July 2020, the cost of a Uganda Gorilla Permit will be adjusted to USD800 per person per trek.
The journey to encounter these remarkable creatures is an experience beyond compare. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park boasts eighteen habituated Gorilla families, each a chapter waiting to be explored. The trailheads of Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo serve as the portals into this world of wonder, each unveiling a unique tale of Gorilla life.
For those yearning to delve deeper into the world of Uganda’s Gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is an exquisite opportunity. This initiative allows for extended moments of connection with Gorillas undergoing habituation, granting you invaluable insights into their lives. A Gorilla habituation experience permit costs USD1500 per person per trek in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. These encounters are limited to four individuals per Gorilla family, ensuring a personal and unobtrusive experience.
Bwindi’s embrace can be chilly, particularly in the mornings and evenings. The annual average temperature ranging between 70°C to 20°C highlights the need for warm clothing. Rain, an essential life-bringer, frequents the park with up to 2390mm of rainfall annually. This precipitation falls primarily during the short rains of March to May and the heavy rains of September to November. It’s worth noting that Bwindi’s rain often manifests as gentle drizzles rather than intense downpours.
In the presence of these remarkable creatures, guidelines ensure a harmonious coexistence and minimize disturbances to the Gorillas. Groups are capped at eight visitors per day, safeguarding the Gorillas from unnecessary stress and human-borne diseases.
