The Nkuringo Gorilla Family is one of the gorilla families in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It was the first family to be habituated in 1997, and later opened for tracking in 2004. The group was named after the local area it was first spotted, which means “Hills”. At first, the group consisted of 19 members, but over the years, the number has decreased to only 12 members. The group was led by Rafiki, a Swahili word meaning “Friend”, until his death in 2008. The Nkuringo Gorilla Family is also known for being the first group to have given birth to twins in 2004, although one of the twins later passed away.
The Bushaho Gorilla Family, one of the newer additions to the gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, currently consists of 9 members.
