Exclusive Three Horned Chameleon Rwenzori Walks — Rwenzori National Park, situated in western Uganda near the Democratic Republic of Congo, is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. Within this park resides a rare and endangered species, the Jackson chameleon. These remarkable creatures make their home at altitudes ranging from 1700 meters to 2022 meters above sea level, where our lodge is located, making it the perfect destination for an exclusive three-horned chameleon tracking experience.
What sets the Jackson chameleon apart from its counterparts is its fascinating life cycle. Unlike other chameleons, the Jackson chameleon lives freely for an astonishing 17 to 18 years. Female Jackson chameleons give birth to live offspring, a distinctive characteristic in the chameleon world. These chameleons are not poisonous and are known for their friendly disposition.
During your tracking adventure, you’ll have the opportunity to search for these creatures in their natural habitat, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. With our commitment to conservation, your chances of spotting them are virtually guaranteed. As you explore, you’ll be treated to stunning nature vistas, and your guide will provide insights into the traditional and contemporary uses of the various tree shrubs encountered along the trail.
Mountain Rwenzori National Park experiences a unique climate due to its equatorial location. The eastern slopes receive the highest rainfall, especially from March to May and September to mid-December. For an excellent tour experience, consider traveling to the park from June to September when it tends to be drier. The temperature in the area ranges from approximately 5 to 20 degrees Celsius.
To access this natural wonder, plan for about a 5-hour drive from Kampala to Kasese. You can opt for a 4-wheel drive safari vehicle rental or public transportation, although comfort might be compromised with the latter. Popular routes include the Kampala-Fort Portal or Kampala-Mbarara-Queen Elizabeth routes. Alternatively, you can take a flight from Kajjansi airfield.
Accommodations abound in this park, catering to various preferences:
