Situated in southwestern Uganda, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park captivates with mist-covered hillsides draped in one of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests. With a rich history dating back over 25,000 years, the forest shelters nearly 400 plant species. Notably, it serves as the protective habitat for an estimated 400 mountain gorillas – approximately half of the world’s population, featuring several habituated groups available for tracking.
This biologically diverse region also provides shelter to a further 120 mammals, including several primate species such as baboons and chimpanzees, as well as elephants and antelopes. The forest hosts around 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.
The neighboring towns of Buhoma and Nkuringo offer a range of accommodations, from luxury lodges to rustic bandas and budget campsites, along with restaurants, craft stalls, and guiding services. Opportunities abound to discover the local Bakiga and Batwa Pygmy cultures through performances, workshops, and village experiences.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park boasts four tracking locations – Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo – with a total of approximately 18 gorilla families. Permits must be purchased in advance, allowing only eight visitors per group to spend one hour per day with the gorillas. The tracking duration varies, ranging from a few hours to a whole day.
Bwindi’s diverse habitat makes it an ideal home for a variety of birds, with 350 species recorded, including 23 endemics. Notable sightings include the Short-tailed Warbler, Blue-headed Sunbird, African Emerald Cuckoo, Common Bulbul, African Blue, White-tailed Blue Flycatchers, and Red-headed Bluebill.
Explore the Habinyanja (Railegh) Trail, a 4-6-hour journey through steep ascents, swamps, and lush landscapes. Birders on this trail can spot the Pel’s Fishing Owl, African Black Duck, and Black Bee Eaters, among others.
Immerse yourself in the Batwa cultural experience by venturing into Nyamugali Pocket Forest. Led by a Mutwa (pygmy) guide and an English translator, this trail reveals medicinal herbs, caves, original Batwa huts, local fire-making, behavior in the forest, wonderful views, different tree species, beekeeping, Batwa artifacts, utensils, nature walks in the impenetrable virgin forest, and more.
A 9km hike leading to three levels of picturesque waterfalls, offering enchanting views of primates, birds, and unique flora. Enthusiastic hikers are guided by professional park ranger guides through the lush rainforest and bush tracks.
The optimal months for gorilla trekking in Bwindi are January, February, June, July, August, September, and December. During these months, there is less rainfall, and in some cases, no rain at all. Despite the high demand for Gorilla permits, these months are favored by travelers for an exceptional gorilla tracking experience. Trek Africa Expeditions meticulously arranges gorilla tracking tours to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, ensuring an unforgettable adventure amidst the natural marvels of the region.
