Gorilla Trekking with kids — Are you planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park with children? According to Uganda Wildlife Authority regulations, the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. Children younger than this are generally not permitted to participate in gorilla treks. However, if you have younger children and wish to include them in the experience, Trek Africa Expeditions can guide you through the process and discuss potential exceptions.
Children under 15 are usually not allowed on gorilla treks for several reasons. Firstly, children may be more prone to making noise or acting unpredictably, which could disturb the gorillas and provoke them to act aggressively. Secondly, children might carry communicable diseases like coughs and colds that could be transmitted to the gorillas, who share over 98% of their DNA with humans. Lastly, the trek through Bwindi can be physically demanding, with steep, slippery, and uneven terrain that may be challenging for younger trekkers.
If you have a child aged 15 or older, they are subject to the same permit fees as adults. Typically, children are grouped with their families during the trek to ensure proper supervision and care. However, if a child is under 15, they will not be allowed to trek, even with a secured permit. Instead, they can accompany their parents to the park and remain at the lodge or with the driver-guide while the adults are trekking. Children can still enjoy other activities such as nature walks and community visits.
Gorilla trekking is not limited by age, though it may be more challenging for the elderly. For older travelers, there are options available to make the trek more manageable. Porters can assist with carrying bags and offering support, and sedan chairs can be hired for approximately $300 to help transport elderly trekkers to and from the forest. Many visitors in their 70s and 80s have successfully completed gorilla treks, making it an accessible and unforgettable experience for people of all ages.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southern Uganda near the border with Congo, is one of the world’s premier destinations for gorilla trekking. It is home to more than half of the remaining mountain gorillas in the wild. The park is divided into several sectors—Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo—each offering unique trekking experiences.
Each sector has habituated gorilla families, each led by a dominant silverback male. To participate in a trek, you must obtain a valid gorilla permit for the specific day. Due to the park’s conservation efforts, only eight people are allowed to trek with each gorilla family per day, making permits highly sought after.
Gorilla tracking is the highlight of a visit to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This park is home to approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, offering you a remarkable 98% chance of encountering these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Bwindi’s mountain gorillas are distributed across four distinct sectors within the park: Rushaga and Nkuringo in the southern region, and Ruhija and Buhoma in the northeastern and eastern parts, respectively.
To participate in a gorilla trek at Bwindi, obtaining a gorilla permit is essential. These permits must be purchased in advance to ensure your spot on the trek. Each gorilla family is limited to eight trekkers per day, so it is crucial to secure your permit well in advance—ideally, several months before your visit. Permits are issued based on availability, so early booking increases your chances of getting a spot on your desired date.
