Your safety and enjoyment are paramount, which is why horseback rides are tailored to your riding ability. For beginners and those with limited riding experience, a leisurely walk is recommended. Advanced riders, on the other hand, can relish lovely stretches for trotting and cantering. Mihingo Lodge has been organizing horse safaris since December 2008, initially outside Lake Mburo National Park. In November 2009, they secured a concession to operate horse safaris within the park, unveiling some remarkable riding routes.

One of the most exhilarating rides in the park, ideal for experienced riders, is the 4 to 5-hour journey that ventures onto the grassy Warukiri range of hills nestled in the heart of the park. From the vantage point of the Warukiri ridge, you’ll be treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding hills and valleys within the park. On the distant hill, you might even spot a herd of buffalo relishing the cool air. This ride offers a magnificent perspective on 9 of the 12 lakes that grace Lake Mburo National Park, transforming your perception of the park into something truly spectacular.

Horse and Rider Compatibility:

To ensure the well-being of their horses, Mihingo Lodge sets a maximum weight limit for riders, with 100 kg being the upper limit. However, most horses can comfortably carry no more than 85 kg. For the safety of the horses, riders may be weighed, and this practice is essential to protect the animals from potential harm, especially to their backs.

Safety is paramount, and to this end, Mihingo Lodge provides fully adjustable helmets in various sizes, along with riding chaps. English-style saddles are used for the rides. While participating, it is advisable to wear long trousers and sturdy shoes, preferably with a heel. However, trainers are also acceptable footwear. Each ride is limited to a maximum of 6 guests at a time, ensuring a personalized and safe experience. Accompanying each ride are at least one experienced horse guide, with many rides led by two guides for added security and knowledge.
